First shots with my new rifle (Savage 93V 22 WMR)
« on: January 23, 2012, 05:35:17 PM »
Even though it was cold here Saturday, I couldn't wait any longer to try out my newest rifle, a Savage 93V in 22 mag.  I did not want to invest in a high quality scope until I tried the rifle first.
I chose a Centerpoint 4X16X40 with illuminated reticle.
I fired a few rounds at 50 yds to get this rig close to zero.  I was not shooting very well.  My hands were numb and cold and I was shaking like a leaf.
I decided to try one 100 yd 5 shot group and call it quits.  I am sure I can do better when the weather warms up and I have a better scope on the rifle.  The ammo was CCI 30 gr. V-Max

If this gun does what I think it can I want one of these, then look out Yotes.

I left out 2 pics.  This is what I want for this rifle.

It looks like this now.

My Savage 93 22 WMR shoots the best using the Remington Priemier 33 grain V-max ammo. Give it a try.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

My 93F .22 mag likes  40 gr WW HP and Hornady 33 gr Vmax.
Like all .17 HRM rounds, the 33 gr Vmax rounds are all made by CCI..you just pay more for some brands...I believe all Remington .22 mags are made by CCI, 40 gr included.

One of my favorite rifles!  I hunted groundhogs with my 93FV all summer in 2011, did very well with it too.  Used the Hornady 30gr. V-Max loads.  Never did any paper-punching with it, but since I plan on taking it west this summer for some gopher hunting, I thought I'd round-up all the .22WMR ammo options I could get my hands on...hit the range...see what it likes best.  (still in the round-up stage  ;) )  Only brand name I haven't tried is the Remington 33gr., so I just picked some up last week...and was shocked at the price~ $16.50 a box.  (granted, this is Canada...but still  :) )  Most .22WMR I shoot is around $12-$13 a box.

Anyhow, here is my rifle with a couple of minor modifications.  Still thinking of upgrading the stock..

How much trouble and expense for that cool bolt handle?

Yeah !! I like the looks of the bolt handle too . Is their a reason for the big bolt handle . Do the Savage rim fire's have that heavy bolt lift as their centre fire rifle lines ?

It's the same bolt handle Savage puts on their TR/TRR rimfires, a "tactical" style.  I like it because it's a better fit for my big mitts!  My local Savage gunsmith had one in his parts bin when I asked him how much he'd charge to alter my existing bolt. (grind the ball off/thread for an aftermarket bolt handle)  Said I wanted one like the TR's.  He said; "why don't you put a TR one on there?"   :)
