Crunched the Kids Car Today
« on: January 23, 2012, 09:29:33 PM »
Went into Fairbanks today to work out at the gym.  Sky had taken my S-10 due to the roads being slick up on the hill at the University.  It's flat where I was going so I just took his Eclipse.  I should be OK on flat land, and cleared pavement on the highway and in town.  After my workout, headed back home.  Roads were a bit icy and slick, just took it easy.  As I drove down our street I remembered I had forgot to stop at the Post Office and pick up some packages.  I past the drive and turned down the next street, heading to the Post Office.  Only going about five or six miles per hour.  Suddenly the rear end started swinging wide.  Turned into the skid, no good it just went faster.  I thought OK I'm going to take the snow bank.  Then I saw a mail box coming, not good.  Hit the snow bank hard enough to stop my momentum going into the ditch.  But as the car continued to swing around the front bumper hit the post, and the hood caught the bottom of the mail box.  Mail box put four scratches on the Carbon Fiber Hood, I watched it make contact.  A little jel coat and some buffing and that can be covered up.  Then the rear swung on around and hit the snow bank, stopping the car.  I immediately backed away from the bank, into the drive.  Got out to check for damage.  My feet went out from under me, and I'm glad the car is so low.

Got up off the snow pack, just as the woman that lives in the house I was in front of, whose mail box I had hit, came out.  Half way down her drive she went down.  We had high winds yesterday that glazed everything over.  Then a fresh inch of snow on top of the hard pack over night.  We checked out her mail box, no damage at all.  She said more damage was done to her back side.  I checked the front of the Eclipse.  At 15 below plastic gets brittle.  At 45 or 50 degrees nothing would have happened.  the plastic would have flexed and popped back.  But not today.  Plastic is shattered all the way across the front of the car.  A big hole is left just over the fog light, under the head light.  Taking it to the body shop tomorrow, for an estimate.  But waiting till spring to fix it.  Might hit another snow bank before breakup.  (That's spring thaw to you Cheechackos).    No reason to fix it now.  The wife is talking about not letting me drive any more.  Sky just laughed, saying I've done more than that to Dad's vehicles, I can not say a thing, as long as he fixes it.

Sorry to hear that Sourdough. Crunched cars can be fixed but when you fall broken bones don't fix so easy. If i fell i don't think i would be able to get up again. Maybe that is why i stay in the house when the weather is like that here. Just for the fun of it let us know what the estimate for repairs are.

Strange... dad wrecking the kid's car. Ussually the other way around. Fortunately no one was hurt. You could have just parked in the drive way and when asked said I don't know. It wasn't me... :o

Sourdough,
Glad no one was hurt. From previous posts of yours concerning this car I think you just have bad karma with this car and need to slowly back away from it and never touch it again. ;D

magooch:  I don't live in town.  I live in a rural area.  No paved streets.

williamlayton -  ;D ;D ;D ;D You just gave me my laugh for the day.  I usually go over to the conspiracy section and read that for my laughs, especially if  :-X is posting, which he usually is. :o ;)
