Why do you "like" the 30.06?
« on: January 25, 2012, 06:40:34 AM »
How about those who "really like" the 30.06? Tell us what your favorite rifle is and what loads you used, liked the best? What scope power do you use with also.

My favorite .30-06 is the one that I inherited from my grandfather. In fact its the only 30-06 that I still own; my son will one day inherit it from me, and hopefully it will stay in the family. Its a Winchester M70 that was made in 1954, the stock is well worn and it has seen its fare share of days in the field. It is my favorite because it is just so dang accurate.

The rifle is glassed with a Leupold 3-9 variable power scope and my standard projectile is for my .30 calibre rifles is a 165 gr bullet. If I'm out just shooting the rifle or looking to take an antelope or a deer...it'll be loaded with a Sierra BT. If my quarry is elk...then it will be a Barnes TSX.

Not my all time favorite calibre...but dang it is sure fun to shoot.  8)

Mines a rem cdl topped with a leopold 3-9 and is one of my finest rifles. I shoot cheap bulk win power points over 4350 and get 2'' groups at 200 yards. Thats good enough for me.

The 30-06  can shoot anything from Armidillos  to Zebras with the right bullet and if you can't find ammo for it, you fell off our planet. lol

My 30-06 is a Ruger #1RSI. I like the style of gun. What I like about the caliber is the wide range of bullets and load info available for the 30-06, and that I have found a very accurate 180 gr SIE PH / H4350 load for it but can still walk into any hardware store and some little country stores and find cartridges for it when I forget to pack those loads.

That is a huge plus for the .30-06...walk into most any store that carries ammo and shooting supplies and you are gonna see .30-30 and .30-06 ammo for sale.

My wife just likes the name. I will come in from hunting or from the range, and the first thing she says is "did you shoot your aught six"?

  Hello Rev Jim:

I think the reason for me liking the 06 maybe because it was the first hi-powered rifle that I ever fired. Just  a teenager probably 15 yrs. my older brothers son and me took the 03a3 out one Christmas and shot about 2-300 rds with it. It was a blast and it shot much farther than any 22 ever could and what power it had. I have never got over shooting a 06 rifle.
I purchased my first CF rifle when in the USN, it too was a 06 a 740 Rem., Then a mod 70 Win with a 3x9 Redfield. I like them for the wide range of bullets and they are very versitile for hunting and not too uncomfortable to shoot from the bench. I have shot crows ect. with them with the 130 gr HP speer and a full case of 4350, groups around 7/8 @ 100yds. I shot the crows while they were on the ground, not in trees.
My favorite one is the Mod 70, altho it is shot-out, I have 3 mod. 700's and 2 98 Mauser/rebarreled and 1 742, in 30-06. I guess you could say that I like this cartridge. I now load 165 Rem CL  bullets mostly, buy bulk, save money, more shooting. If I could have only 1 CF rifle it would be the  VENERABLE OLD 30-06. JMO
It also shoots cast very well, I load 31141 lyman GC, drops out at about 176grs. and with a load of 18-20 grs. of 4227 it is fun to shoot, and can take deer size at close range with carefully placed shots.
  HM

Also I forgot to say that my All-Time favorite 30-06 is the M-1 Gar. I have shot them a lot but do not own one, maybe I need to think this over.

I couldn't sleep at night if I didn't have at least one in the house. I had four at one time, three Remingtons, 700, 742, 760 and an Encore. I still have the 700 and Encore plus a friends
700 sporter from the early 70s. The 30-06 was the first centerfire weapon I ever shot. I was
thirteen years old, LOVE at first bang, shot many newspaper bags full of surplus ammo. I lived on a rural island paradise shot lots of nutria and other varmits.

Ive got 3 and wouldnt be without at least one. Its the most versitile rifle chamber out there. 150s can be loaded to shoot as flat as 130 grain 270s for shooting whitetail or antelope out to 300 yards or a bit more. 180s can be loaded to kill about anything larger. 165s can be loaded to do double duty on both ends. Relitively light recoil, accuracy, hard hitting, flat shooting, brass and loaded ammo are everywhere and cheap to buy. Whats there not to like?

Because it works on everything on the continent I live on. Can't add much to the praise that has already been posted. I agree with all. Mine is a M-70 Sporter Classic Stainless from the '90s. Burris 3x9 scope. 180gr Sierra Game Kings over 56grs of IMR 4350. 3/4", 3 shot groups. If I could only have one hunting rifle, this would be it!

When I was a kid, my best friends dad used a Remington 740 with iron sights for deer. We hunted them with dogs back then, and he was expert at shooting running deer, hogs. He shot 150 CL factory ammo. He bought my friend a J.C. Higgins bolt gun with a 3x9 Leupold and it was "the" rifle in my bunch, ha. I was still a 30-30 boy, but when I was barely 16, my uncle gave me a 1917 Enfield surplus rifle with a bandolier of 180 armor piercing rounds in Garand clips, just before he died. I shot all them up at nutria, puddle ducks, it was sacry accurate. It shot all hunting ammo about 15" high at 100, so I never used it. I took it to a local "shade tree" gunsmith to have it sporterized. He skipped the country with everyones guns! I was almost 17 then. Texas Rangers caught him 18 mos later. I was home on leave from Army when I got the call to pick it up at the court house in Liberty.
He had cut the stock down some, but cut the barrel off at 24", ground  ears off to Mod 70 dimensions, and added Williams Guide sights on it. I was able to zero it then. I had it for years, then a friend shaped/bedded/fitted a Bishop stock to it. He added a Traister trigger and DT it for a scope. I put an old Tasco 4X with a 4 minute dot on it. It was a shooter, but I never did cotton to it so never shot a deer with it! Too heavy to pack around, and I never liked the cock on closing, although I could have had a Traister cock on opening speedlock whatever to it. When I was in Bible College, it was the only rifle I had, I had sold off everything just to get there. I learned alot about handloading for a 30.06 with that old rifle!Later, when I moved out here to SLC, UT I gave that rifle to a dear friend out here, a lady who used to guide with her husband in Idaho. She uses it still to teach youngsters to shoot, so my Uncle would have been proud, he wanted it shot.
I've had several more through the years, Remington 742's, Winchester Model 70's, Mausers, Remington model 700's,and  one 1903-A3. I have to say my favorite are the Remington 700's.

The top pic is the 760 30-06 I bought in '77. My son shot that buck about 4 years ago. I removed the whiteline spacers and shot three coats of satin polyurathane on it. I had a 3x9 and then a 2x7 on it. My son has it now and it has a Leupold 2.5x8 with the p&d reticle. I used 165gr bullets in it mostly. I loaded 165gr corelokts and he loades 165gr Hornadys now. I used 180gr Rem factory ammo in it at first.I've taken more deer with it than any other I've owned. Knowing what I do now I would have kept that rifle and had it NP3 coated, mounted a Leupold 4x scope with the P&D reticle, and never looked back.

The bottom pic is my current 30-06. It's a stainless classic M70 with an Accuracy Innovations "ghost" laminate stock. It has a Leupold FX-III 6x42 with the heavy duplex reticle in a DNZ mount. It's the 4th scope I've had on it. I had a Burris 1.5x6, Pentax 2x8, Leupold 3x9 on it before the 6x42. I've loaded 165gr Corelokts, Hornady SST's, and Hornady flat base bullets always using 56gr of H4350. I went with the 6x scope since my 30-06 any time, any place rifle. I like the 165gr bullet weight for the accuracy and perfomance I get. They have always exited for me.  I did use the Federal 165gr load using the 165gr Sierra boat tail bullet once and thought it damaged too much meat. Same with the Hornady SST.

Did you mean "55 gr" instead of "65gr?"  I always used either IMR/H4350 with 58gr behind the 165/168. I just picked up spme Barnes 130 TTSX for mule deer/antelope. I use Varget with the Nosler 125BT, but I feel it is too soft for deer...well, if I want to eat most of it, ha. I shot a bunch of rock chucks with that 125BT and it opened them up like a suitcase! ha.

My Ruger Hawkeye is like a point and shoot camera.  Nothing too fancy on the features, ain't worried about gnat's ass perfection, just point, click, and kill whatever the hell it's pointed at.

You gotta love 4350 anything in the '06! I now use the Hodgdon Extreme powders exclusively for hunting loads. Last week, it was 10 degrees in the morning, and 35 deg at noon. Load workup was done at 60 deg...that's a big swing! I had R19 give me a fit, but in a 338 winmag. I never had a problem with it in the .240 Weathergy ( an '06 sized case).

Side note: I like everything about the Remington Mountains rifle but the skinny barrel! ( I hate the DCM models, wouldn't have one) It's too short ( 22") and just too whippy. I like a rifle thatis  tad muzzle heavy. I'm pretty sure I will end up having this rifle rebarreled with a Shilen #2, cut at 24". I had a similar rifle made up years ago and it felt perfect to me. I like Shilen barrels, though I've had and liked McGowan, Lilja, Douglas and even Adams & Bennet barrels. They all were great. I've just had more Shilens than anything else.

Just getting into center fire in my old age. First cf gun i got to fire was a 7mm mag. Thought it kicked more than i liked and hated the trigger. My daughters mil GAVE me a Rem 700 in 30-06 to get it out of the house. Just in time for my first elk hunt. Loved everything about that gun. Getting my first elk a month after getting it didn't hurt either.  I had liked the idea that ammo could be found every where and was cheaper than most. I also liked that everyone compares every caliber to the 30-06. And for all the above reasons already posted. Being a lefty i thought a semi auto 30-06 would be everything i would ever need. The Garand seemed to be top dog. I found a great deal on a good substitute, bar safari with the boss in 30-06 $499. Since i don't reload, it's perfect. The wife even let me top it with a Burris Eliminator. (I really love that woman) Its not the lightest combo but i can't (don't) hike  as far as i used to. My oldest now carries the Rem 700 now for the same reasons.

I was sorely tempted to have this Mountain Rifle set up as a 6.5/06, as I have always thought it would be ( and I'm sure it is) a good one, based on my 6.5/284 experieces. However, since I was never planning to shoot any bullet weight over 120-130gr in it, I stuck to my original plan on another 30.06. The Barnes 130 TTSX can easily do 3300 out of a 24" bbl 30.06, the same bullet weight in the 6.5/06 easily does 3200. Not alot of difference, but I would need another set of dies, .270 brass to neck down, and 6.5 bullets. I have all that already for the 30.06, ha. I have bullet weights from 110 to 240 for the '06, so the 6.5/06 ( or 6.5/270) project will have to be later. Actually, my smith can put an "in-line" magazine in my Model 7 for the 6.5/284 and I can use it with the 120-125 grain loads. I really like the 6.5/284, but in a short action. For coyotes to Fallow/Axis, I've used nothijg but the Nosler 120bt and 125P bullets. It does nothing the 30.06 does not do with same bullet weights of course. Hard to not like a 30.06.

Because it works. I use a handload in mine, a 180 grain BTSP hornady behind 57 (i think) grains of H4350. Its a clinton era (has a lock on the bolt) Rem 700 ADL with a synthetic stock, some sort of weatherproof finish on the barrel, iron sites and I have a nikon pro-staff on it. I have several other rifles, several, and this one always reliably shoots the tightest groups. I am a smaller dude, bout 167 pounds, so I prefer my 270 or 243 for most deer work, but I usually carry this 30-06 for elk every fall. 5t is a thumper though. Kicks like a dern mule so I dont shoot it a ton. I am tempted to put a better recoil reducer on it but Im afraid it would loose its fit.

The 30-06 generates about the most recoil the average shooter can tolerate in a standard weight rifle. The US Army had that part figured that part over 100 years ago. ;)
The only down side to a 30-06 is it needs a long action and scope makers have shortened many scopes to the point extention rings and or stock crawling are needed. :(

It would help too if scope makers would figure out that 1.5" to 3" eye relief ain't cuttin it either. Why can some find the proper balance between eye relief and field of view and some can't? I can't help it if I'm a knuckle dragger in arm length................. ;D

The scope ring problem is easily solved for the 30-06 length actions by using two piece base/ring combos that allow one or both rings to be reversed to properly position the scope further or closer to the shooters eye for proper eye relief.

saddlebum , I fixed this problem of eye relief with a 3-9X40 zeiss conquest. That thing has 4 inches of eye relief. The rifle ist "fit" to me so I still get it on the forhead everynow and again, but it really helps. 500 bucks but its the best scope I own.

Yes! Four inches or better is a requirement for eye relief since a stock that fits me has a pull length of 14". One has to pay attention to the specs when buying a scope. And the ones that have the right specs for me, seem to cost a few dollars more. I'm just too high maintenance for my own good. The Burris Fullfield on my favorite rifle, (above), will get replaced one of these days. It would be an okay scope for someone of smaller stature than me. Maybe even a Zeiss!

Because it works well for me. Main two: LH stainless stalker w/Nikon Monarch 2.5x10,165gr.fusion....BAR w/boss,camoed,with vxIII 3.5x10,180gr. corelokt. Occasionally use a LH 760w/peep sightw/same green box180's.Also have another 760 for my son,and an 03A3 sporter for fun.Bullets readily available, reasonable. Attractive for non-reloaders, like myself. The round has stood the test of time, lotsa game taken everywhere.Whats not to like?

For most big game hunting the 30-06 Springfield is just fine.  Since its the most popular cartridge it makes sense to use it.   Other rounds will work of course.

I have handloaded for the 30-06 since 1953.

One of my  best sporters is chambered for it and its my first choice.
