Getting Older, Shooting Magnums ?
« on: January 25, 2012, 07:09:40 AM »
Hi all. At 51, I dont consider myself an old man. But, I went out shooting yesterday, took my 686 2 1/2, my 22 rifle, my 22 revolver. I fired 6 rounds of 110 gr.357,s, and all I could think was WOW, what am I doing with this thing ? I fired 50 rounds of standard 38 sp, and it was kind of nice. I then Shot around 200 rounds, out of the 22 rifle and revolver, and it was pure fun !  When I was younger, I used to love to shoot my S W 29, and my 12 guage shot gun, id shoot them as much as I could, didnt bother me at all. But now, it seems as though I prefer, a 20 guage shot gun, and a little less bark and bite from my magnum handguns. So ive got a question. Am I the only 1, or do some of you, prefer a softer recoil as you age ?  I still love magnum rounds, and high powered rifles, It just seems it bothers me a little more to fire them.   :'(

I understand exactly what you are saying.  I don't shoot 3.5" shells at ducks anymore as I can kill just as many with 3". I use the 20 ga for doves and wish I had a 28.   I also shoot 38s in my Mod 66 Smith when practicing.  Rather than Elmer Keith's max load in the .44 mag, I only load 8gr. of unique in my 45 LC with the 255 gr Keith bullet.   I discovered the 6.5x55 and it is enjoyable to shoot compared to the magnums.   There is a fine line between being tuff and stupid and at my age, I don't need to prove to anyone that I am tuff... or stupid.

Yessir it's a part of gettin older, and maybe wiser? :o ;D
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

My magnum deer rifles have not seen the light of day in a decade.  Now its 7mm-08 or 308 and I kill them just as far and just as dead.  Did I also mention that I have had three rotator cuff surgeries?  No more mags.

It goes like Lenny Bruce's 5 stages of grief. First, you just want to shoot, all the time, at anything that moves, you love the guns, the game, the competetion etc. Then, it becomes about how many you shoot, getting your limit, how many various species or competitive venu's  you can get into etc, Then it becomes about quality vs quantity, getting the biggest buck, boar, bull, stag etc, a truly "quality, world class" animal. Then it becomes about HOW. You move on to ultra long range shooting, muzzle loading, archery, one shot hunts, it is all about methodology and the choice of weapons, hunt conditions etc. Sounds like you may be moving from 3 into 4, or something like it. I am in my 60th year and contemplating retirement by 62. My eyes are not good ( 25+ years of computer screens etc), I am not in great shape, arthritis, and I have lost several friends to disease, mostly various cancers, in the last few years. In looking over the details  I have reviewed mortality tables, statistics , genetic markers, environmental risks etc. I am not morbid, but I am going to die, most likely in 20 to 22 years, with high probably. Sounds like a lot doesn't it? The odds are that when it comes to hunting and outdoor escapades 15 seems most likely. Even 10 years ago I never really considered it at all, as if there were an infinite number. There are not.
I still have to get up before sunrise and hustle off to work, but now I spend more time just looking at them. My wife and I make a point of watching every sunset we can together , she is lucky, she is a cancer survivor. 37 years ago, my mother was not so lucky. A few years later, neither was my father. I go to work surrounded by people who are convinced there are important things going on there, I smile quietly, for I know there is not.
I read Ecclesiastes alot these days, and I find that I need a lot clearer rationale to do almost anything. The flip side, little things dont bug me near as much as they used to. My needs have shrunk, my wants are markedly simpler, if more esoteric.
I notice that almost all of my guns are single shot these days, and though I am rarely unarmed on my walks, I also rarely fire them at anything. I think that I should shoot a few hawks to spare the rabbit population, and increase the odds for stew, but I never do. Call it professional courtesy. How much stew have I eaten anyway? I just love to watch them fly. Anyway, the noise bothers my ears more than it used to, dont hear worth a damn as it is. My rifle is like an old friend, one you know so well that you dont have to say anything, they just know it. We just enjoy the company. I shot 4 dove this year, with my little single barrel 28. I missed 1. They were delicious. I have 10-15 every morning now at my feeder in the yard. The cycle goes on.
It is like George Burns said in Oh God, everything means just exactly as much as YOU think it does, not more, not less. Figure out what is good in your life, and do that thing. Are you the only one? Is that relevant ? All those real opinionated people, been there, done that, to what end? I have spent a lifetime collecting this or that, the great bulk of which my grandson will use up in phase 1, or maybe 2.  I watch him with anticipation, for the journey he embarks on I have nearly completed.
There is nothing better than this, that a man should enjoy the fruit of his labor, for that is his portion. Shoot what makes you happy my friend, you know what that is. Nothing else is important, because no one else can enjoy something for you.
Enjoy #4. #5 will arrive right on time, whenever that happens to be.

I can shoot almost anything one or twice---I choose what I prefer to shoot a lot.
.357's and .41's are not yet on the list of I can shoot it if  I have to. "J" frames and the PPK are on that list. They are just not a lot of fun to shoot a lot.
Doesn't make you a bad person.

Anymore, I have to wear a glove when shooting the .357 Max Contender.  I wear a recoil pad now when shooting most of the mil-surp rifles too.

Hey wait a minute.  51 isn't old.  I can almost remember what I was doing back when I was 51.  As for recoil and the like - a good pair of shooting gloves and a PAST Recoil Shield shouldhelp with those problems, and you can reload the 357 to recoil a bit easier with heavier, slower moving bullets.  Give it a try, it's better'n oatmeal and a granny blanket...

Well, its nice to know im not the only 1. I guees, I was just trying to act like I did many years ago, when I could shoot the bigger guns with no problems. I just like being outdoors and shooting. So ive come to the conclusion, im just going to quit trying to be young again, and start shooting less recoiling guns. After all, its just being outdoors and having fun, that counts right ?

I am 61, for the moment, and I find that I have zero interest in shooting body thumping rifles and shotguns.  I have even talked to folks about it, it sort of surprised me.  What has surprised me more is that I have gotten to enjoy shooting big handguns more, things like my 30 carb Ruger.  Fact is, though, that I am very content to sit with my Contender in 17hmr and shoot thru the same hole for an afternoon for the price of a couple of boxes of ammo.

Us older folks have a lifetime of buying and culling, so that when we get into our late sixties, the guns we have kept are so fine, so precise and so rare, that it wouldn't be appropriate to give them to unappreciative youngsters who think guns are supposed to be black and made out of plastic.

I bought a .338 mag and a .375 Ruger for elks but I load them on the low side (FPE 3500-3800) so I don't get hurt when I shoot.  But my favorites are my CZ 527 and Savage .204.  Both of them are way under minute of angle guns.

I'm 64, have arthritis and small wrists. I found a good home for my Smith 629, kept the 19-4. I shoot 38s in it but shoot the 223s and Hornets more. I have started loading  reduced recoil rounds in the 30-06s and 45-70s. The important thing, it seems to me, is to adapt to your limitations and KEEP SHOOTING!! If my condition dictates, I will shoot rimfires, could even do that from a wheelchair if necessary, but I will keep shooting!

I have posted this somewhere before--if you remember where and are bored by it I am sorry--I just don't remember where and to who---so you are stuck with hearing it again.
If'n I won the BIG lotto--had 15000 acres, with a house in the middle, I would own a lot of guns and 4 wheeler to transport them in.
Just driving around and choosing what I wanted to shoot at and with what---to include a Mas Deuce.

hi...

I'm a little over 57 years old now.

Shooting big bore handguns all my life and I hope to continue for quite a few more years, God willing.

I shoot a lot, but also work at keeping my hands and arms strong. I had a stress fracture in my right wrist about 15-20 years ago and couldn't shoot my handguns all summer that year. I use those spring steel hand grip exercise units to keep my hand strength up.

Most powerful rifles I own are a.30/06 and a 7mm Magnum...I have no problem shooting them, either. Usually limit myself to about a 20 rounds of each per range session, though. I also shoot .303 British and 7x57 Mauser also, so a range session with the rifles usually averages 80 rounds total, before my son and I switch over to the 7.62x39 SKS rifles. We can easily burn through a couple hundred rounds of those in a range session per rifle.

We also shoot clay birds at our range...we usually take one of those 100-round shotshell value packs and 2-3 12-gauge shotguns along when we go to the range. 50 rounds or so of 12-gauge recoil bothers me more than any rifle or pistol shooting ever did.

I get more wear and tear on my right arm reloading the thousands of rounds of handgun ammunition we go through each year than I ever will shooting.

I'm 53 and just reacquainted myself with 9mm. Also picked up some new .357 ammo for my m60.  It's Rem Golden Sabre and its designed for the snub....considered midrange velocity.  Bit more than 38  +p and a bit less than full house 357.  Guess what?  I can hit the target much faster cause of less recoil ...  whoda thunk it. I have a number of 44s and 45s and still shoot them allot and I've come to the realization that full house 480s are about the top end of the recoil chart for me.  Still....I'm having a 475Limbaugh built. My 45/70 is a deadly pussycat with my 350gr loads and my 375HH will conquer pretty much everything else.  I love my 300win but shoot my 17HMR and 223s quite allot more.    But then again....I'm sure if a 416 or a 375ruger appeared unexpectedly....I believe I wouldn't be able to live without it....sometimes I'm fickle......

As the senior citizen of those that have stated their age I have something to share from experience. It's just going to get worse.

Anything over 357 mag in a handgun is done for me after developing arthritis in my wrist. After having both shoulders rebuilt last year I'm not going to be shooting any rifles with much recoil either. Shooting without a rest is still out as my left arm can't hold up the weight yet. I missed a gopher in the backyard just because of that last Wednesday.

Some days nothing hurts and it's sort of scary. I keep wondering what is going to go wrong next.  ;D

I'm 65, I'm fortunate in that I'm still in pretty good shape. I'm 6' (shrunk and inch) weigh 175 and I'm still able to do "most" of the things I used to. I don't buck hay by hand anymore, been using a squeeze on my tractor the past 4 years (them 100 lbers over the head turned into up to the waisters) I can't pound fenceposts all day anymore, well I can, just take more breaks in between  ;)  and I really don't enjoy shooting the hard 45 colt loads as much anymore. I like to think of it as not getting older but getting smarter...  ;D  I also believe if you think you can't you more than likely won't..
