30 TCU
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:45:49 AM »
Member Ladobe recently posted on his 30 TCU pistol.  I didn't realize it was a standard or semi-standard chambering.  Info, anyone?  Google was no help.

I noticed that yesterday and my curiosity is piqued as well.  I have 6 TC/U 14" and 7 TC/U in 10" length.  In addition to the 30, was there also a quarter-bore version or am I mistaken?

The 30 TCU is not made up on the 223 case like the others. It is a case that is just a smidgen larger in diameter than a 308 win case but is about 10 or 15 thousands shorter than the 308 win case. It looks a lot like the 30X47 Hunter Bench Rest which is made by using a 300 Savage case and pushing the shoulder back 10 thousands but leaving it the same over all length but the 30 TCU is a little bit bigger diameter case.  From what I have heard others say it is one of those "new" rounds that they make great claims about it getting more velocity etc. than the next of kin like the 308 Win and may do it just a bit but it is because of the way the factory loads the ammo with one of those special powders that you can't get and if you did you can't get that much of it into a case because they have some voodoo way of doing it in the factory. Hornady makes the ammo and it is superformance and is supposed to get 3000 fps with 150 SST and 2850 with 165 SST which is the same as the superformance 308 Win ammo they make.

I think you're talking about two different rounds here ??? ...the 30TCU and the 30TC.  The 30TC is a new round designed by Thompson Center for their then new bolt gun and is NOT compatable with Contenders.

Curtis and Walt are both correct, shot1 has confused two completely different cartridges.

The 30TC's parent case is a shortened 308 Win case.   Would be useable on the Encore, not on the Contender.

The 30TC/U does use the 223 Rem as its parent case (same as all of the TC/U's).   And there was also a 25TC/U (although first called the 25 Ugalde by Wes and Dean) as well as the 6, 6.5 and 7.   If you folks missed out on the 30TC/U, you also won't remember his 30 Apache before it.   ;)
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Any load info?  Bullet weights, velocities, etc.?  Why is it better or worse than a 30-30?

The cartridge which became the .30 TCU had several other name designations  (and possibly slight dimensional variances) as competitive shooters used it for shooting steel. Even the standard 30/.223 (in unimproved form) could be seen on the circuit way back when.

I don't offer load data on public forums, but it is available with some research.

Better or worse is entirely speculative and in the eye of the beholder.   Doesn't take much to improve on the old "rainbow" 30-30 that I grew up with though.

Add that something different has always appealed to me and you end up with as many barrels as I did.

The 30TC would gain on the old 30-30 with its short/fat case in better accuracy and far more punch.   TC claims its equal to the 30-06 and will drive a 150g 2950fps (I presume with factory ammo).  That's about a 30% or more gain over a 30-30 I'd guess.   Some claim it will even surpasses the 30-06 both in speed and accuracy with handloads (shoot flatter).

The 30TC/U absolutely shines with the cast bullets it was designed for to shoot silhouettes with, and as I found with jacketed bullets it was also deadly in windy conditions on predators at longish ranges.   Recoil has never been an issue for me, not with hand or long guns.   But less is conducive of better shooting and so shot placement in general IMO.   I don't load cartridges down, including the 30-30, so the 30TC/U filled the bill.

Naturally YMMV, but for my uses the 30TC/U was a far better choice than the 30-30.

FWIW

SSK can probably help you out.   They are a board sponsor here.
