Didn't know what Silhouette thread to post this in, so I am starting a new post.
Back in the mid 80's I was really into shooting BPC and I met a friend out at the range one day to do some 200 yard gong shooting. After a couple hours my friend ask me if I ever shot .22 silhouette. Told him no, but would be interested. I had my S&W 41 with me as I had plan to shoot some paper targets later. Well, he told that shooting metal would be more fun so we walked down to the silhouette range. My friend, Pete, and I went in the range house and came out with little chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams and he proceeded to set them up all the way out to a 100 yards. I ask Pete if we had to hit them little rams with a .22 pistol. He gave me all the rules and I proceeded to shoot. Hitting them chickens and pigs was no problem, but then I only hit 2 turkeys and no rams. He didn't do any better. I ask him if the turkeys and rams should be closer and he said that was the game.
Well, we shot about 5 or 6 rounds and I got progressively better and really started getting into it.
By the 5th round I was cleaning his plow and wound up hitting 4 turkeys and 3 rams. Man, I was getting hot to start shooting this game.
The next Sunday morning I met with my aspirin tablet .22 bench rest shooting group and started telling them about how much fun I had shooting .22 pistol silhouette. How I felt like my shooting improved a 1,000% especially on them turkeys and rams.
They all started snickering and finally broke out laughing. Not especially like being the butt end of a joke I demanded an explanation. They told me the real rules and that unofficially I was the new club .22 silhouette champion.
Getting over my embarrassment, I told I would take them on anytime and that I had a witness to my shooting. The next club newsletter came out with the story of me being the club .22 silhouette champion and that Pete was getting a consolation prize of a silhouette rule book. I did shoot in a few unofficial matches after that and we went by the official rules. Shortly, after that I moved across state and never got back into the silhouette game. It is fun.
