45/70 Iron Sights Question
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:38:51 PM »
I need some help, please. I sold Nova71 a 45-70 barrel that had iron sights. I had removed them and now can't seem to locate them(must have put them in a safe place)..anyway I have sights on a 30-30 barrel and sights on a 223 superlight barrel...Both have the "williams " rear sight but the 30-30 has a thick front ramp while the 223 has a thinner profile front sight (also on a ramp)I will send him one of them if anyone here can maybe check your guns to see if either one will work on the 45-70? My old eyes need a scope anyway.

Thanks in advance
12g shortie w/chokes,Tamer .410,12g "Buck" slug gun w/20g extra barrel, 12g smooth bore tracker I, 45/410 w/22vp matched set, 7mm-08, .308 20",

my avatar pic is my 1960 Rambler I bought in 1972 for $175..6 banger 3-on-the-tree...drove it for 5 yrs  22mpg.. was "hot-rodding" (LOL) one night...tore out 1st/reverse gear. Drove it that way for 2 yrs(with no reverse and only 2nd and high)  Had to really plan ahead when parking.
sold it for $125

They should fasten to the barrel, but I don't know about the height.

Using a dial caliper, the front sight blade thickness on my 45-70 is .095. Is that of any help?

gh,

The height of the front site is the important dimension.  I removed all my 45-70 sights and gave them away so no help with a measurement.  IIRC there is discussion in the FAQs regarding sight heights, at least for the BC.

Front sight on my 45-70 Talo Trapper is ~.485" tall and the blade is .085" wide, the 2008 parts lists shows a .476" tall sight.

The front sight on my 30-30 is about 9/16 " from barrel to top.  The 223 superlight actually measures a little taller then 9/16" but shy of 5/8".  Since both sights are mounted on the barrel itself, and not on the chamber swell, shouldn't just about anything work?

Knight which rear sight do you have #1 or #2?  I have seen both types used on 45/70's

And thanks to all those who helped me on this

I have the top one.  ...the Williams with the ramped sight(slide it forward/up to raise elevation).

H&R has four different Handi-rifle sight heights listed in the parts list, not including the 500S&W and muzzleloader(Huntsman and Sidekick) sights.
