Powders for .44 mag. rifle
« on: January 27, 2012, 03:42:38 AM »
Going to be reloading again for the .44 mag(marlin 1894) .I use to use H110 & 240 gr xtps for deer with great results. How does the newer powders like Lil'gun , power pro 300mp compare with the older ones like h110,2400 & etc. ?

Powders that work best in a pistol will work best in the rifle.

Not always true in my findings.  I'm loading .45 Colt with Reloader7 and would never go back to H110 or Unique for my carbine loads.  I can get 1800+ Fps with safe pressures using the slower burning powder.  ;)  Here's a link to an interesting article you may want to check out.

I am sure there may be loads for a .44 that'd be better with slower powder too.  ;)

Ya know, some time back, when I was just getting into reloading for handgun cartages, ol' Graybeard told me all I needed was Unique and 2400.  In the years since I have never found reason to question that advice.  I have added H110 for my 500 hi-ebber!   ;D

But, never being one to let well enough alone, your comments about Reloader 7 interest me.  ;)

I have a M92 in 44 Mag. and a '73 in 45 Colt.  Both have 24 inch barrels.  Do you think Reloader 7 would be an improvement, velocity wise as I don't think the accuracy or my hunting loads can be improved on, over 2400?   ???

Oh, I do try to keep my max pressure down to about 18K psi in the '73.

In the '73 you would probably have to be very careful.  In that article I listed, there is a section on '73 repros.
Quote
Personally I think they are beautiful, the actions are as smooth as glass on most, but they are weak because of the three part toggle bolt/action design. And pressure must stay around the original 14,000 cup (a little higher than PSI).
I'd probably follow his advice, albeit he did have a few more words on this if you read that section.  ;)

As for the modern 92, I'd have to think definitely room to improve.  I'm using his starting load in the .45 colt and getting terrific performance over H110 and it kicks less and is much more consistent.  I use XTP Magnums only with the Reloader7 rounds for my carbine, and it put my buck down this year very well, even on a somewhat spotty full run hit.  Just caught the rear of the lungs and still he went 10 steps and down and was immobile in less than 10 seconds.  ;)  240 gr. XTP Magnums are also very nice and can bump up 2 gr. to get even flatter trajectory and better long range accuracy.  They can be a little hard to find though.  8(  I started using a Speer 240gr. sportsmaster in my pistol and thus I have no issue keeping the Heavy carbine loads separate from the blackhawk loads.  ;)

This flies in the face of everything I've ever read and or tried but you could be right.
