chambering suggestions?
« on: January 27, 2012, 08:16:55 AM »
I'm probably buying an unchambered 24" .30 cal barrel (.308) made by brux.  I'm getting a good deal on it from a co-worker.  Now if I'm going to do this, I want a different round to shoot in it.  I already have 2 .30-'06 and 1 .308.  I like smaller cartridges but this still has to be able to take deer and hogs.  All suggestions are welcome.  I'll probably be putting this on a 700 action.

Thanks in advance,
NGH

30 Rem. AR

I think Remington should offer this in their Model 7.

You say you have rifles in .308 Win and 30-06 but didnt say if you want to go bigger or smaller.
If you wanted something of less capacity the 30 Rem. AR or 300 Savage would be nice, if you wanted more power try the 300 Ruger compact magnum.

Since this is the wildcat forum are you looking to build a 30 cal wildcat vs standard caliber?  there is lot of wildcats from the 30Br,30x44 etc.

Long or short action?

What size bolt face do you have now?

I found out the barrel is actually a 1 in 10" twist so I know I can go to a heavier (or longer) bullet if I want to.  I do like smaller cartridges.  I have no need for more recoil than a .30-'06 makes.  I have .45-70's for that.  I haven't seen the barrel.  The guy doesn't know much really and isn't sure if the barrel is currently chambered or if it is just a blank.  I have a "feeling" that it is a .308 win barrel but am hoping for a blank.  I'm thinking of something like a .300 whisper or .30BR.  I don't have a receiver or bolt yet so I'm really open to about anything that makes sense.  He doesn't know the profile of the barrel but since his idea was to build something accurate for longer ranges, I bet it's a heavier barrel.

You could go with the 30X47. It is a 300 Savage case with the shoulder pushed back 10 thousands inch but the case is left the same COAL as the 300 Savage making a smaller powder chamber but plenty of neck length. This was a very popular hunter class bench rest caliber a few years back. I have one that I got in an estate sale that is on a Ruger 77 action and I really have not found any load that was not accurate. With a case full of IMR 4895 and any bullet from 110 to 168 gr is a tack driver. With 125 gr BT I get 2850 fps with 150/155 gr I get 2650 fps. I don't know who made the barrel but it is same size as a Ruger varmint 24" long CM blue. It is in a Ruger wood stock glass bedded with a Canjar trigger. With it's weight recoil is about like a sporter weight 223 Rem. 125 ballistic tips are death in their tracks on deer. 155 Berger VLD is mind blowing accurate and blows baseball size exits in deer.

Ok...

.30BR
.300 Whisper
.30x47
.30 REM AR
.300 Savage

All possibilities.  All I want is to be able to use a 150 gr bullet for hunting and to make about 200 yds easily.
