Another Model cannon ID question
« on: January 29, 2012, 11:07:46 AM »
Wife brought me home a present...  a model.  I guess she figured she might as well humor the cannon nut.  It is unmarked except for a non-distinct coat of arms (I suppose) and the letters MDLXX cast into the brass barrel.  Barrel is 8" over all with 1/2" bore (closer than I can measure) .  The ornate wheels are cast also.  The split trail carriage is of a very light wood, held together with brass turnings & brass cap nuts.  Full length bore & the touch hole is drilled through...  maybe a firecracker cannon.  No, I'm not going to fire it...

It's going on a shelf.  Not sure what early era it represents...

You've got an exceptionally rare, extraodinary, wonderful wife.  Any wife who will buy you cannons these days is a keeper.

I looked up th Roman numerals...  too many years since HS.
M=1000 + D=500 + L=50 + X=10 + X=10
1570

I'd say the model is intended to be decorative, like, put it on the end of a bar, or on the mantle, or bookshelf.  It isn't exactly like any real cannon I've seen but is kind of a hybrid of features intended to convey the general impression of an old, highly-decorated bronze field or siege gun.  Call it Spanish if you want, I'm sure there were cannons made in Spain which looked something like that, at least as far as the barrel is concerned.   The maker didn't find an old cannon and try to replicate it, he just put this together with some representative features.

I agree with both of cannonmn's posts. Looks like a non specific representation. And you've got a keeper, I'd settle for not getting "the eye roll" anytime my girlfriend sees me looking at cannons.
