.17 hmr sportster...whoo hooooo!!!
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:05:27 PM »
I don't pick up  that many guns anymore that really excite me.  Finally got time to day to really work with the new 17hmr.  Good cleanup, 3 fouling rounds, then a group.

I thought that I had one hole and had missed the target with the other three.  Nope, they passed through that one hole.

Before putting it away, I taped a penny to the target, set it at 100, and put a round through it  the first shot.

Easiest gun to get used to since the 22 mag. I worked with week before last.....another success story.

Love these sportsters.

Got a present of a "sweet 17" scope for this one, but I hate to touch it now to install the new scope.

I love mine, great for our little Red Squirrels (they are the size of chipmunks).  I put BSA's Sweet 17 on it.  Not the greatest scope in the world, but it works well for me.  It is dead on out to 125 yards, then the bullet goes higher than the cross hairs.  At 225 yards it's about 2" higher than the scope, but at 275 they come back together.  If you are shooting at a fox, no problem, you will still hit it at any distance from 25 to 300 yards if you range and dial properly.

At our local range there is a mound of dirt we shoot into.  It is 337 yards from the firing line.  the reticle on the BSA scope is heavy about half way up, then it gets thin.  At that junction, with the scope dialed for 300 yards, it is right on for 337 yards.  I go out and throw a bunch (4 or 5) of 4" clay skeet targets out on the mound.  Then I will sit and shoot them.  Every shot breaks a target.  I take a shot, open the action, replace the cartridge, snuggle back into the gun on the rest, resight, take the shot, then do it all over again.  Usually when all of the targets are broken, and I turn around, there is people standing behind me wanting to see what I am shooting.  They can't believe a H&R Sportster in .17 HMR can shoot that far.  I love to show off.

I've never picked up many guns I felt I could hit a penny with at 100 yds. that didn't cost a fortune.

This is a sweet little gun.

Congrats Ben!!!  ;D I got stung by the 17HMR bug a couple years after they came out, ended up with four of them including a Sportser, plus a 17M2 Sportster, best advice I can give is find ammo that shoots good, then go buy all that lot number you can afford!  8)

I'm working on that Tim.  The three boxes I have came from Wally World, and are Winchester, with the eraser tips.  I will go back by and buy what they had left, if they are still there.

The brand isn't so much the difference since it's all made by CCI in the Lewiston ID plant, or was the last time I checked which I have to admit has been a while. But lot numbers within each brand can vary, most likely because of wear/calibration on their machines, the same lot number will have been produced within a relatively short time, it doesn't take much change in that little round to affect performance.

Don't seem to matter which brand of ammo I grab, it's the bullet weight that makes a difference.  CCI hits the same place as Hornady.

I'm not talking about POI, but accuracy, different lots of identical brand and weight ammo will shoot tighter groups, ¼-½" compared to ¾-1", if you accept ~1" groups, it doesn't make much difference, but it will do much better.  ;) One variable that's been mentioned is rim thickness which affects headspace and thus accuracy.

mine has not been ammo sensitive at all, doesn't matter what brand or weight they all shoot very well for me, my only gripe is the weight but I will likely be cutting it down to 17 to18" and looking for a light compact 4x scope for it. I hope to get the total weight under 7lbs and will be very happy if i can get it to 6.5lbs.

To tell the truth, I found a brand and type that shot well and bought a bunch...  ::)

Mine shoots pretty well too!! Still don't shoot as well as my 17M2. ::)
