American Western Arms Revolvers
« on: January 20, 2004, 06:25:58 PM »
Any of you know where I can find information/review articles/field test for the AWA Peacekeeper or Longhorn revolvers?

Do you own one and how do you like it?  Please tell me the positive and negative points of the gun.

I need some good information before plunking down my retirement dollars.

Many thanks.

Check www.awaguns.com for their website.  I have two Peacekeepers in .44 spl.  The finish is spectacular.  Casehardening is as beautiful as the best out there and the guns are high polished before blueing.  The action is slick, I did replace the mainsprings with Wolff as the stock seemed too soft.  The only problem I had was the chamber throats were too tight (in the old days, many guns were too large, nowdays it seems many guns are too tight!) on one of them and I had to have my gunsmith open them up a little.  Now they are both excellent shooters.  Since AWA has just come out with a new style of gun, it seems that you can find the Peacekeepers out there on discount.  My first one cost me $600 new, the second only $450, so look around for a bargain.  I'm very satisfied with mine.    44 Man

Many thanks, 44Man.  I have seen their website.  Find looking photos that don't really tell us anything.  I can not find a solid review article on any of their guns.
I will give this about a week and the "want one" will wear off.  Probably stick with my Rugers.

Hey Doc

If'n I was you I'd hang onto your rugers or git a SAA clone made by uberty. I have had two AWA peacekeepers and was not saisfied with either one. I think the action job they do is built right into the gun with loose tolerances between the hammer, trigger and bolt and thier respective pins. I dont think they will hold up to alot of honest use. The two I have had also showed typical sloppy work. Although the $450 price tag is better than the $630 I paid.

They do have real nice color hardening and blueing for sure. I know one of the shops that does some of their hardening work and it is 1st class all the way.

It just seams to me that the product is not up to the hype verybody gives them.  My opinion is to have an Uberty clone tuned by a competent gun smith and you will have a much better gun.

Take a look at a EMF Great Western 2. They are by far the best SAA copies out there.

Lorelei and I have had 4 of the Longhorns in .357 for about two years now. On the average, we've shot at least two matches a month, plus practice,  and have had no problems. A friend has also had a pair of Longhorns  for about a year and a half, with no problems.

Out of the six pistols, two had to have the barrels twisted to shoot to point-of-aim (off by about three inches at 10 yards), the others were fine in windage. All had to have the front sight filed for elevation with our loads. Now all shoot to point-of-aim.

Hammer and trigger pull have been consistently great so far. Timing is right on.

These guns shoot better than I do... I do like 'em.

Doc.

Own 2 Peacekeepers and 2 Longhorns......very pleased with all of them.  Shoot 4 matches per month, plus practice, and they have not let me down yet.  In .38/357 with 5 1/2" barrels......going on 3 years now with the AWA's.

Drawbacks:  I prefer the black gutta-percha type grips, but very hard to find.

AWA single-actions are a very GOOD VALUE for what you spend on them.

I own a 4 3/4" Longhorn, in .45 Colt, and it's one of the best SAA clones I've ever owned! I've had all the various brands from Ruger, EMF, Dakota, Uberti, etc. and this AWA is fantastic, right out of the box. The action is buttery smooth, and beautifully finished!
My Dakota was professionally refinished, and an action job done at Ballard, when it was Steve Garvey's cowboy gun, and I can honestly say this AWA is just as nice!
My local dealer is selling them for $400, but he found me a like new, in the box, used one for $300! Couldn't get my wallet out fast enough!
Ballard, the great American Rifles!

I have an AWA, 5 1/2, 45lc and a Great Western 4 5/8, 45lc. If some one told me they were made by the same company, I would believe it. They are as identicle as can be. Both actions are as smooth and light as my USFA.
