sent barrel off for conversion
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:51:48 AM »
Just sent my 450 marlin barrel to s.m.i to have converted to smokeless muzzle loader. Called and ordered a ramrod from hubbard outdoors. I was wondering where i can find the rod holder for front of barrel i already have a huntsman forearm to use.i just picked up some 45/357 sabots to try what is your opinion of these

I believe they're a dovetail installation, and sized for 50 cal.

Jason,

10-4 for the dovetail for the ramrod thimble.  I would talk to SMI and see if they can install the thimble for you.  I found an old plastic CVA barrel band/ramrod thimble on an auction site for a couple of bucks.  It works but ain't the prettiest thing in the world.
the 357/45 sabots didn't work as well in my 45 MZ as the 40/45 sabots.  It seems the 357/45s are easier to blow out and also they limit you to lighter weight bullets.  I have had good luck with smokeless and the harvester 40/45 crush rib sabots and the MMP 40/45 (tan color) sabots.   If your 40 cal bullets are sized .401" then you might want the crush rib sabots.  I found in my 45 MZ the MMP sabots with a .401 bullet where too difficult to load and I was damaging the petals.

I would really like to do that with a .45-70 Buff Classic.  Was also wondering how much it ends up costing.

Why not shoot full bore slugs?

For some time I have wondered why people buy a 50, 54 what ever cal rifle only to load it with 44 cal projectiles... Maybe years ago the sabots offered better accuracy but today that is lots of full bore options...  Just throwing it out there...

I was unaware this conversion was also to smokeless powder.

As has been pointed aut to me, please do some research before using full bore slugs in a smokeless muzzle loader.

Hello Jason,
I have converted several barrels for alot of people and I never ever recommend use of full bore bullets.
Always use a sabot with smokeless powder. The sabot is your pressure relief valve, if you load too much powder the sabot will blow out and let the excess pressure go out the muzzle. I've been shooting and building smokeless powder muzzleloaders for several years and I've blown quite a few sabots while experimenting with different loads, I've still got all ten fingers and both eyes, although the old eyes ain't what they used to be. :(
Get some harvester sabots, part #H4540B and use with Hornady .400", 200 grain XTP bullets. If your bore is tight enough you will get good results with H-4198, if it's not tight enough the powder will not ignite and the 209 primer will blow the load out the barrel a few feet.
If you experience this get some Accurate 5744 and you will never have any trouble with ignition. I always recommend the 5744 because I know it will be trouble free, you won't get as much velocity but the deer will never know the difference. ;)

Stay safe and always use a sabot.

GOOD SHOOTING!

SAME HERE!!  I have shot muzzle loaders for some time, but NEVER a smokless. Appearently this vastly changes things! You stop learning the day you die!

When I first posted my comment about full bore slugs, I did not even know this conversion was to smokeless! I was thinking it was still black powder.

Good luck,

savage model 10 ml dot com  has their loads listed for smokeless muzzle loading. would think that should give a starting point. not really primitive hunting but sure is nice to not worry about  rusting. in fact i have not shot my huntsman or knight since getting the savage. to each his own

Jason,
Is there a chance that we could see some pictures, especially of the ignition end & chamber area.
What other changes did they make, for example: was removal of the ejector/extractor required?

I have a load of questions:
Are you still using a 209 primer as an ignition source?
I assume that the breech plug is still removable, is my assumption correct?
Does, anyone know if a SB2 frame is a must? Or is the only item necessary a smokeless cartridge barrel?
What size bullet & what sabot would you have to use?
Does this conversion use the Savage breech plug?

Any info you provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

as soon as i get it backin mail i will post pictures of plug and barrel work,i am putting it on a shotgun frame ,there is no breech thrust so i wouldnt think an sb2 is needed. i am gonna be using 45 cal sabots i have some that take a 357 bullet and i just order some for 40 cal bullets ,i will have to wait and see which ones shoot the best.it is a removable breech plug.uses 209 primers

I just want to make sure. The 450 marlin or 45-70 barrels can be converted to smokeless muzzleloaders right. Because that's the only reason I'm getting one.
