Question for Ackley reloaders

I bought my first Ackley Improved in 22-250. I shot it yesterday for the first time with Hornady Varmint 58 grainers. Not Ackley Improved cases but standard factory loads. Acurracy was pretty bad. All over a 24 inch square at 25 yards.
 
Question: Is poor accuracy normal for an Ackley Barrel when using non-Ackley cases?

Usually not. The groups will tighten up when you use the fireformed brass thou. Different barrels, different results. gypsyman

First thing I'd check would be the scope, but second would be stock fit.  Typically walking is heat and barrel not being floated.  ;)

I have a 280 Ackley that shoots standard 280 about as well as Improved cases.  I've found that my Improved cases are formed better after two firings.  I tried the shotgun powder and toilet paper loads to fireform but I do not think the case shoulders are as crisp.
Ackley cases tend to have a long life.

Most all the improved rounds I've owned in the past have been about as accurate with fire forming loads as after the cases were fire formed. Not always but most of the time. I think you need to look elsewhere for the reason they aren't accurate.

My 257AI is not quite as accurate with standard cases as it is whit fireformed ones.  BUT, they are nowhere near as bad as what you describe.

I never had a problem with my German Mauser in 30-06 Springfield Ackley Improved using fire form loads.
 
I would check the scope, base and rings first.

It is a La Caruna Mauser. I bought it from a relative of the old fellow that had it built. I honestly don't know if it had been fired when I got it. It says .22-250 AI on the massive 20 inch bull barrel. It came with old style weaver bases and I mounted a 6-18 Millett scope.

I tried to switch the bases to some two piece leupolds I have but the old "hump" prevented me from using them. I am looking at a Picatinny Rail the maker swears clears the Hump. Would allow me to make a solid mount and use better rings for a stronger base.
