Charter Arms
« on: January 30, 2012, 05:31:38 PM »
Any of you shot or purchased the Charter Arms Pitbull in .40 S&W?
GunBlast ( www.gunblast.com) has a good video on shooting the Pitbull.
Charter Arms tell me that they have plans to bring out the .45ACP in 2013.
That would be my choice for CCW.

Yep, that and a couple other configurations.  I'd been in touch too and I'm realllly hoping for another .45 option Mr. Ecker has discussed.  ;)

I would think a .45ACP in a 3" would be the "cats meow" for ccw.

True, but if you handload you can equal or exceed .45 ACP ballistics from the .44 special.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I agree coyotejoe, even better would be the .45 Colt! If you handload you would have a wide range to choose from, recoil being your only problem on the higher end in a short pistol.

There is more to consider than recoil.  Charters are not known to tolerate +P pressures well in the big bores.  Buffalo Bore's website states not for use in: Charter Arms.

does Cor bon say thats because they wont handle the pressures or because of bullet pull issues due to the light weight of the gun ???

There's absolutely no issue shooting +P ammo in Charters.  It isn't recommended, but can be done.  This is from their FAQ and I've found this to be perfectly accurate in the 12 oz aluminum undercover lights.  I also find that 5.1 gr. Unique, below +P, with a 110 gr. XTP bullet will do plenty and not over penetrate.  I don't think there are too many instances +P should ever be used in a snubby for sure or even in longer barreled pistols.  These days magnumitis has everyone thinking that there's a requirement to be doing top possible velocity to get things done.  ;)

Q.Can I shoot +P in my .38 revolver?
A.Charter .38's are among the smallest         revolvers in this caliber. Yes they can handle +P but we do not recommend it for the following reasons:
+P ammo requires a four-inch minimum barrel to burn the extra powder. Therefore, in a two-inch barrel the extra powder is burned after the bullet leaves the barrel creating more recoil and making it harder to come back to target.
We recommend a standard velocity load and practice with round nose lead rounds which are the least expensive. When you load for protection, use a jacketed or hollow point in the same grain you practice with.

If you want an interesting listen, this is a link to a radio broadcast featuring two guys who torture tested the undercover lite aluminum frames:  http://www.charterfirearms.com/audio/What%20Distinguishes%20a%20Charter.MP3

Yepper, loaded up 20 of the .40-65 Winchesters to shoot in the old levergun.  Goex FFFg and a 315gr. Lead with SPG Lube.  ;)  Cannot wait.  If I can get out and test this lastest batch of .38's I'm going to load up a bunch more of them hopefully soon.  Been too cold (below freezing) most of the time here.  8(

Charter Arms Undercover Lite aka Pink Lady.  Bought it for the wife, but I like shooting it too.  I'm looking at getting a .357 Mag Pug also.  ;)

Put about 400 rounds through it so far with zero hiccups and shot great outta the box.  ;)

Yep, I was trying to sell her on several different guns and she saw this and went, "That's it."  and it was, lol.  Couldn't budge her off it once she saw it.  I was amazed that you could get easy head size groups at 30 yards from a snubby though.  I mean I can fast fire at 30 yards and get 10" group.  Fastfire at 15 yards stays in a 6" dirty bird.  On my shooting tree also, with like 4" rounds I can hit about 3-4 every cylinder quick firing it.  ;)  The mag pug is all steel and handles 357, so I can bump things up a bit for me or let her shoot it also.  I am looking at the 4" though with adjustable sights.  I'm not real fond of fixed sights for my guns.  ;)

Heck tacklebury, with shooting like that you probably could take on "Raylan" federal marshall in the tv series" Justified"!  ;D  Presuming you could outdraw him!! ;) ;)
Are you at liberty to pass on what other .45 option that Charter Arms might be considering?

Well the new .40 S&W Pitbull is supposedly going to be offered in .45 ACP as they've stated later this year.  The other one I was discussing involved a longer frame and cylinder in the Bulldog line, but haven't received any further info after re-contacting Mr. Ecker, so I'm not sure what's happening on that one.

Charter Arms will take some stout loads.  My Bulldog is 5 years old and I've shot a lot of hot loads out of it and it's still as tight as when new.

I have though about a Target Mag Pug to carry around the farm. Biggest thing would maybe be a rabid dog or even less likely 2 legged skunk. Mostly possums, coon, and feral cats.

Wife just got her SS 2" in 22LR to do practical practice for her carry S&W38 Airweight. It is stiff and tight and will break in nicely. About 500 dry fires dbl action (with the hammer fall dampened) and it is noticeably smoother. It points well and hits where its looking. The neo grip fills the hand well and is a better grasp than the neo boot grip on the S&W, yet close enough that it is natural to go from one to the other. I have her using 5 of the six chambers to emulate the 5 shot S&W too.
All in all we are pleased so far with it, though it is a kick in the chops that it cost (out the door) $90 more than I sold my SS S&W kit gun for only a few years ago. Oh well, that is what it is......

I just bought one of the pit bull revolvers in 40 S&W for my CCW . It is really neat how they have made a revolver like that to accept an ACP round without the use of clips .
But my hands are small and it can be a handful to shoot.  So I couldn't imagine a 45 ACP in a gun that small , at least not for me .

Thanks for the feedback Anna.  I personally find that .40 S&W has more kick than .45 ACP in most configurations.  My buddy has a XD in .40 and it kicks a lot harder than my .45 ACP semi auto in about the same size package.  I am really hoping they still do the .45 ACP for me anyway.  Then I can stick to .45's for all my handgunning, except the wife's .38 hehe
