My season in retrospect...
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:46:18 PM »
Posting this here since all our deer were killed with 2 H&Rs (Handi 35rem and Topper 30-30) this year... Sorry if it doesnt belong here...

Well today officially ended my deer season. As i sat in the stand with darkness quickly overtaking the last hints of daylight i began to rethink the deer season ive had.

I killed my deer early, taking my 4th and final deer in early December. We had meat in the freezer so it was time to turn to hunting for antlers. I saw a couple nice bucks but never could get a shot. What i did get to see was bucks sparring for the first time, bucks chasing does for the first time, heard a buck grunt and wheeze during a challenge for the first time, and just got to watch deer interact with each other a lot. I also got to watch squirrels frolicking about, not being aware of my prescence. Had some wood ducks on the pond entertaining me several mornings. Got to watch turkey move about, also unaware of my presence. Saw some nice gobblers too. Called in some hens to within 10 feet, and they never saw me. I was wearing blaze orange and no camo...

Ahhh, and another first, Hannah took her first deer, bringing the total for the Joe S. clan to 5. What a great memory we made new years day!! One i hope i never forget...

The Good Lord blessed me this season even tho i didnt get my wall hanger or limit out. It was by far the best season ive had in my life. I give all the glory to Him, the creator of all things.

Thanks for listening, er, reading...

I think sometimes alot of us tend to over look or take for granted what we do see while hunting. I like you enjoy seeing all the other critter activity while hunting. I think if more people seen the way animals acted (without be bothered) We would have more folks hunting. Could be why I don't share with non hunters ;D
Coolest thing I ever had happen setting on a ladder stand. Had a doe walk the egde of a field with her young spotted fawn walking just inside the woods. The little thing walked up to my stand, and commenced to rub it side on my ladder. It was hard not to make a noise while laughing inside. Momma must have seen me move, she snorted and picked up her pace. Baby kept rubbing until content, then strolled off.

You sir have figured out that hunting isn't about killing something. It's about being out and just seeing what the good Lord has provided for us.I never fired a shot this year, but had a good season. The best part of last year was having a new Grand Son born in July.Hope I live long enough to take him out for the first time. That's my plan.

That's what hunting is all about.  Out of 5 tags total for Antelope, Elk and Deer, I only filled one deer tag leaving 4 tags unfilled.  Still had a great hunting season.  I'm only sorry my 3 oldest boys didn't get a deer this year.  DP

Heck, if it wasn't for all the non-kill events and happenings while "hunting", I'd a quit hunting years ago, other than turkey, I've only killed one deer in the last 10yrs. This past season I had close encounters and interacted with a flock of turkeys with some very vocal toms in November while hunting elk, saw elk in deer season and a nice buck in elk season, even added a couple birds to my life list,  never fired a shot,  still had some of the best "hunts" I can recollect.  8)

Back before I was married I introduced my wife to be to firearms and hunting. I gave her her pistol certification. I taught her to shoot and to hunt she enjoys it to this day. Hunting is harder for her as she is a baker and always up early early so days off sleeping is a Prority. But she shoots competitively with me in bullseye compatitions.

She went hunting with me for almost two years before grasping why I loved hunting and the outdoors so much. I know exactly where we stood when it came to her and what a experience it was. She literally proclaimed I understand!!  It was a great beautiful November day. The weather was warm ( for Nov) and we had seen numerous animals. We sat to gather in a series of stone edges overlooking some hard woods. Two does fed below us as we watched them, they ran off abruptly and a coyote emerged and ran off too before I could shoot him. Walking out, down the tote road with the sun setting Over our shoulders, she "got it". She truly understood that killing or shooting deer, was nearly the farthest thing from or in this experience. Simply being these, doing nothing be experiencing life was it.

Great story thank you for posting, and it jiving my memories of that day so many years ago.

You guys all summed it up nicely. I didn't see a single deer this past season, not even a doe but I had a great time just the same watching what happens in the woods when you're quiet and let yourself become a part of the woods.
