NEW AMERICAN CARS
« on: January 31, 2012, 12:56:20 AM »
This is a takeoff of an article on the net news.
Of the new American cars--from 2010 to present--which will you have wished--in the future--you would have owned.
Do not let your choice be guided by practicalities like mileage.
Chevrolet (GMC) is making some--I have a preference for a couple of Ford Mustangs.
Blessings

Oh, this is easy - a 2011 Mustang GT with that magnificent Coyote motor. Or, the V6 model, with the speed limiter removed... shame for a 300hp car to be limited to 117mph.

I've owned three of them - a '66, a 67, and an '88 5.0 - the latest is simply magnificent.

I swear I had a moment very much like this in my high school parking lot one night, when Dad taught me to drive in his '67  w/289 3spd...

Coming soon to a showroom here and there - 2012 Boss 302, with 444 hp, running low 12s in the quarter. For those with more scratch and a little patience, Ford's working on the 2013 GT500, a supercharged pony with... 650hp. YOWZA...

Growing up in the 70s, where cars go slower every year... it's kind of nice to see bone-stock cars running 12s.

Ford GT

Only one I'd care for.  I sold my late model Mustang to buy a Yaris.

Mustang has a two seat Boss model that I really like.
Saying that, I am getting to old to handle the HP--not from wanting it.
Yaris?
GM does have some good looking retro's--and some in convertables,
The speed limit is changing to 75mph here in Texas. I like to take the Pony Car out west and drive.
This April me and the car are going from Houston to Junction, down to Del Rio, back up to the Big Bend and Alpine. From there back home along some route.
My wife said go--she doesn't like driving.
Blessings

William, last time I drove to Del Rio from San Antone the speed limit was 80.  Also from Ft Worth to El Paso it was 80.  Three years ago I was driving the Mazda RX-8 across west Texas.  Speed limit was 80, I was cruising about 90, when I got passed by a Texas Ranger.  When he was about 1/4 mile ahead I started kicking the cruise up.  At 110mph I finally quite losing ground to him.  For the next three hours we cruised at 110.  As we neared El Paso I dropped the cruise back down due to traffic.

After leaving El Paso I headed north to Alamogordo.  After passing through Oro Grande, the speed limit sign just said "End of 45 mph".  I put my foot in it and held it.  At 100 I set the cruise, then kept bumping it up, till I reached 140 mph.  Did not take long till I was having to back it down for the Border Patrol Check Point, just before Bolls Acres coming into Alamogordo.

Love driving out there, you can see anything coming miles away.  Just watch for Coyotes and Jackrabbits.

Hooker and Swampy:  I too love the Ford GT.  Drove one of the original Ford GT-40s back in 1973 in Las Vegas.  But I can not get into one anymore, arthritis won't let me bend enough to get in under the low roof.  I tried a few years ago when the local Ford Dealer had one sitting in his show room.  But the Viper I can get into when the top is down.  that's the only reason I did not go with the Ford GT myself.

YES! I averaged 105mph on that stretch of road from EP to Ft Sockton.
Speed limit is still 80mph---just don't drive that fast at night due to the deer.

Same here. I drive an '04 Ford Police Interceptor (retired unmarked cruiser). I have a '99 Jeep Cherokee that I love with 242K miles on it but when it finally gives out I'll replace it with an F150.

I'm old and have bought a lot of american vehicles the last one is sitting in my driveway with 35,000 miles on it with great hunks of paint falling off of it and rusting, then the government gave the american auto makers a lot of my tax money,

My 2010 Mustang only has the 4.6 V8 and that is plenty for me--it has 140 on the speed-o-meter. That new V6 has more HP and 160 on the speed-o-meter---due to the 6 speed tranny.
I wish I had the 6 speed tranny---actually I wish I had the BIG motor, but I don't know why---of course I have more low end performance.
I will never go back to grinding gears again.
Wish in one hand and--well you know.

In case you didn't hear the news, Ford didn't take any government bailout money.

My Red 87 F-150 had the paint flake and fall off.  Ford recalled the trucks with bad paint and repainted them.  The dealership did not have the red paint, but the manager of the body shop looked outside and said he had the gray that was on that Aerostar, pointing to the vehicle sitting just outside the door.  I told him that would be fine.  Two weeks later I got my truck back with an outstanding paint job.  I took it home and parked it beside that gray Aerostar, a perfect match.  (The Aerostar belonged to my wife).  All the neighbors thought I had gotten a new truck.

If I was to buy a new truck, it would be another Ford.  I have only owned one Chevy, and I will never buy another.  A lot of my neighbors and friends drive Chevys, it seems their vehicles are in the shop almost as much as they drive them.

I feel the same way about Chevy. I grew up a die hard GM guy. Buick's, Oldsmobile's and Chevy's from the 60's and 70's. They all ran great. Along comes the 80's and GM introduces the "metric" transmissions - TH200, TH700R4 etc. Those transmissions were complete junk. Every one that I had blew up. Every one of those that my friends had blew up. It seemed like they were almost guaranteed  to blow up by 75,000 miles. The last Chevy I had was a '92 Caprice wagon. The transmission blew up and I told myself I was done with Chevy. I've been a Ford guy ever since. I've owned a few Crown Victoria's and a few F150's. I've never had a problem with a Ford transmission letting go and I always get at least 200K miles out of them.

See Ironglow's R.I.P. post.  There is no reason to be traveling as fast as some of you say unless it has wings and I'm landing it.  The last time I was doing 85 mph, I was practicing take off and landings in a Cherokee 140.

Yellowtail,
Car manufactures have no need to put things like flap extention or gear extention speed indicators on the speedometer. Those rectangular white signs with the black numbers you see on the side of the road ARE your VNE.  I've spent too many years in EMS removing the mangled remains of people out of crashes who mistakenly thought that their driving skills matched the ability of the vehicles they were driving.  For those who wish to drive at high speed should consider joining NASCAR and do it on a closed course.  Too many bad things can happen on the open road.  I know that it is fun to push things to the limits but please consider the results that would effect your family and loved ones.  In the past 6 months, three young kids (ages, 9,10 and 12) were flown to the hospital where I work.  All of them were on adult size AVTs and involved in crashes.  None survived.  Where was the common sense of the parents letting their children on those machines.  The heartache will last the rest of their lives.  It's just not worth the risk for a little fun.  It's not that I avoid risk, every time I put on my uniform, that badge is a target.  Be careful and stay safe my friend.

I'm gonna wish I had bought a factory tuned Mustang. Say a Boss 302 or Shelby GT 500, I simply don't have the disposable income now.

That GT Ford is beyond my ability to dream Swampy.

Right you are. That is a good way to look at it.

As for which car: Ford F150. 2 wheel drive. Extended cab. Diesel.
