Another question, center to rim fire
« on: January 31, 2012, 08:44:11 AM »
Hi all. New guy with a question. On an older model Contender #143xxx.
To change from center to rim fire do I?
1 Loosen screw in back of the hammer.
2  Remove pin through side of hammer.
3 Turn gizmo in front of hammer 180 degrees.
4 Put pin back and tighten screw?
I think that's the way to do it but I'm not 100% sure.
I'm planning on getting a .22 barrel in the future and want know how to change over before I get it. Thanks for all the stuff I've already learned on this site.

All you have to do is to rotate the face of the hammer 180 degrees.

That's it.

You can either do it from the face, or go in through the back of the hammer and rotate the screw head itself.

I normally do mine by rotating the screw under the hammer spur. I always rotate it clockwise, to help alleviate the chance of backing the screw out.

The face of the hammer won't turn. I didn't try to force it. There is a pin sideways thru the hammer right behind the face. The screw in the back just unscrews. This a 1979 model with a square sliding safety thru the hammer.

The face of the hammer WILL turn, unless it is bound or rusted.  Just stick a flat blade screw driver in it and turn.  What you think is a pin are the set screws that hold a detent spring and ball on either side.  Do not attempt to remove them unless you are prepared to control the springs and balls.  I know this because I spent quite some time looking for mine in the carpet.  At any rate, nothing need be removed in order to rotate the face of the hammer.

The one I've had for years will turn using a dime, no problem. I have not tried the one I bought last fall. So far it has only been fired with centerfire rounds.

OK Thanks guys.  I got the right sized screw driver and it just turns. Glad I didn't try to drive the pin out that isn't a pin. As I get older I'm getting smarter. Ask first before tearing things apart.

Like you discovered, a simple 180 degree turn.  Be careful the addiction has begun.

Ain't the internet wonderful.  Now we are on the net and before we were on our knees hunting little balls and springs in the carpet :) :D ;D .  Been there and done that and love (most) of our progress.

Glad I'm not the only one, Ken.  NOW I go to the 'net first (most of the time).  :o

bortle:  Glad you got it.  You will LOVE your 22rf barrel when you get it.  Out of my 18 barrels 4 of them are 22.  They are just pure fun!

You need to get yourself a dedicated frame for rimfire only!
