Wow thats sucks big time. That man IMO deserves every penny. The folks that locked him up and ignored (they did not just forget he was there) him should be doing some jail time. Dale
The quality of a mans life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence.

I think something is missing from this story, not sure what. Was he in prison or Jail? They talk about both. Jail usually only house inmates for a year or less, prisons are long term, confusing. For a DWI there is no reason to keep him in long term, unless he is a flight risk. Was he sane when he was put in? The whole story does not quite add up.

If this is a true story good for him, just makes me question some of the facts.

Just a thought.  If he had a sister that was willing to take him in and help him, where was she when all this took place?  If I had a relative who allowed me to languish in such a situation before, I'll be dipped if I would have dealings with them after I put major $$$ in my pocket.  As was already said, we aren't getting but a small portion of this story.

He wrote letters from the inside, the news media made a big deal about his letters showing his slipping mental state. If you can write letters you can get the word out. The adressee of his letters should really think about a few things...

Well now---where was his sister? Across the country.
From the tone of the letters it did not seem that it caused her great concern.
Now, I would have to be a fly on the wall to make anything out of this relationship. I think the bottom line is the irresponsibility of NM and its obvious oversight in monitoring these conditions.
Now, NM is a very disconnected state--leaning towards a leisurely, let the counties take care of theirownselves attitude.
That is the problem with disconnected government--in the extreme.

It is unfortunate indeed this man spent 2 years without a trial. He did get 22 million dollars but if his mind is gone what good is that?
It just does not make sense how this could happen in America with all the technology, laws and supposed oversight. Makes you wonder what else could happen.

And this is exactly why I avoid jail like the plague.
