Author Topic: Encore, scopes, hammer extenders... (Read 702 times)

I, like a few others, really prefer my rifle scopes (ready, Chuck?) to be as close to the BBL as possible and therefore all my scopes are mounted with the lowest rings I can get to work. Now, on this Encore .223 fatty, I have the low mount- just the way I like it and the blasted hammer is so close to the ocular bell I have a tough time getting my thumb in there to cock the gun.
I phoned T/C and was told they recommended a tall ring mount. I hate tall rings! So I asked what else could be done and the rep sez that "Some guys are using a hammer extension, but we advise against it." I, naturally asked why and he said the hammer pin would be side loaded and I would be buying another hammer pin...
Question: Who here has knowledge of damage caused by the hammer extensions? Anybody?
('Course ordering one is something else because VV has a phone system right out of the M*A*S*H* organization book.)

I personally dislike hammer ext. VVGC is overloaded right now as the crew is gone to the Reno SCI convention except for Steve. Steve will answer his phone when he is available but that is tough right now. I got through to him Monday after many tries. The hammer ext. have never caused any damage that I know of. If you do not want to deal will waiting on VVGC, try Ebay as there are always some ext on there.

Thanks, 5Redman8. What I did after posting this was I went on the MidwayUSA site and there it was-- $15+ and I ordered one. I plan to put it on and if I get any problems, I'll just call T/C, let them chuckle a bit, and order whatever the thing might need.
I gotta tell ya, though, that bull-BBL .223 is one fine shooting and great-looking piece! Sticking that Leupold up there on stalks would detract from the looks, IMHO.

I've always heard that the steel hammer extensions are the ones that cause all the problems. Too heavy, I guess. Everybody tells me to make sure to get an aluminum one, and there won't be any problems.

Mike Bellm sells one that works well. I doesn't damage anything. Make sure you don't get a steel one that is where you will run into trouble...

I got one from Midsouth that was $8. So far so good. I like it, due to it allowing you to cock it right or left handed.

I too have always liked low mounted scopes but compromised on my Encore. I went with the medium height rings from Warne and can thumbcock without any problem and the scope ain't too high either. I can't say my accurracy has suffered any, I killed 7 deer with mine this year and it will shoot about anything in the 1.5 MOA range all day. Just my thoughts.

I have a hammer extension on my Encore! Love it!

It came with the Encore! It has a round gnurled extension about an inch long and the other part slides over the hammer and there is a small set screw in the center of the extension which is tightened with an allen wrench!

Troubles encountered:
1. I couldn't keep it tight, so I took the set screw out and applied locktite. That fixed it for a while and it loosened up again. Repeated this a couple of times!
2. Next, I put a piece of fine-shot in front of the screw and locktite on the threads again and locked in place. This lasted about 4-5 shots and fell off again!
3. Next, I took a small drill bit and made a small dimple on the side of the hammer for the set-screw to lock into, and put more locktite on the threads and locked as tight as I could turn the allen wrench! Put it in the cabinet to make sure that the locktite is completely cured! I just went out and fired 4 shots and it is still tight, so I may have the problem cured!

Me too. My ML, .223 rifle, and .308 pistol barrels all have the Warne Maxima medium height rings (QD and permanent). With the ML set-up I mounted a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40mm and still had room under the scope to keep the rear sight on. With the.223 I had to remove the rear sight to fit the Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16X40mm. On the ..308 pistol barrel I could have went with lower rings, but I would have had trouble cocking the hammer. Medium height rings are the way to go.

Now, on the flipside. I plan on getting a .44 mag barrel and mounting a dot sight. Since it woln't extend back over the hammer I will more than likely get low or super low mounts for that set-up.

IF you should happen to buy a blue/wood G2 carbine or 209x45, don't bother buying a hammer extension. The hammer is VERY close to the wood when cocked and any extension I've seen will prevent cocking unless serious alteration is done.

Midway is way fast! My hammer extension and Peltor Tactical muffs arrived yesterday A.M. I installed the hammer extension almost immediately ( I was so darned steel-shy I put a magnet on it before opening the little plastic bag and was alarmed as anything when there was attraction!! It took me a while before I realized the attraction was due to the hex screw :oops: ). Anyhow, the Tactical work like magic and the extension is just the nuts!
I appreciate all the advice and input. :toast:
