Found a nice model 23.
« on: February 02, 2012, 07:38:25 PM »
I took a ride over to my favorite gunshop to check things out. He had a real nice model 23 chambered in 25-20. It has the original front sight and a Lyman peep sight on the rear and the woodwork is very nice. There is almost no wear whatsoever on the metal except at the muzzle where the bluing is a little thin. The bore looks brand new... no pitting or wear in the rifling. I've got a single shot 32-20 and I figured this 25-20 would go nicely with it so I went ahead and put a deposit on it. I think it'll make a nice little small game and varmint gun. I'll post some pics when I pick it up.

Any of you guys own one? What do you think of 'em?

I don't own one, but years ago my father won one of these 25-20's in a raffle at work. It had been the rifle of a local minister, and he put this up as a prize.  Dad came home from work with it, and two boxes of ammo.  It was the first center-fire rifle that my brothers and I would learn on, and at one time or another, each of us hunted deer with it.  I never saw a buck to shoot with it, but my youngest brother shot 4 buck in 5 seasons, using a total of six rounds.  Back in those days, we kids hunted with whatever was available to use in the family, and were taught to not waste ammo on bad shots.  We were in grade school, and seldom if ever read about the 25-20 in gun magazines.  We didn't know it was "not adequate" for deer.  You're lucky to find one of these in good shape.  By the way, do you plan to handload for it?  if so, send me a PM.

They where made in 22lR 23A,  22Hornet 23D, 25/20 23B and 32/20 23C.  Great little rifles!!

Thanks for the info CW. :)
I've seen it at the shop a couple times before and never paid much attention to it... until I picked it up the other day. It fits me like it's a piece of my arm and I love it's simplicity. I couldn't leave without laying claim to it. ;D
I plan on reloading for it so I had the shop owner put aside a set of dies for me too. Do you have any pet loads for yours?

I finally got some loads made up for it and took it out shooting. I put together some 86gr. Remington soft points with Remington brass and H4198 powder. All I can say is this thing is a great old gun...I can't believe how good it shoots. I love it.

My apologies Spank.. I never got you those loads...

My most accurate loading is a Speer 75g bullet with BR2015 powder.

I load stiff 2400 with some 86g bullets and like 4198 for the lite 60g...

Good luck with yours, mine is a very good shooter too!
