I prefer a 45 but to say the .40 wasnt one of the greatest rounds ever put on the market is to walk around with blinders. I wonder how many police officers are walking around right now because there departments were intellegent enough to replace there 9mms with 40s! If there ever was a defense/battle round that should never have existed its the 9mm!!! Personaly i think its sad that our goverment even considers letting our troops depend on 9mm ball ammo to defend themselves.

I dunno Lloyd.....I think as the bullets get better, the 9mm does as well.  My way of thinking is that you can't go wrong with a 9, 40 or 45.  I do think the 40 is a compromise caliber...that's my opinion...and there's not a thing wrong with it...that's also my opinion.  I'm much more concerned with velocity from short barrels than I am with caliber these days.  I DO think the 45acp is still the king, but don't feel at all undergunned with the 9mm in a +p or +p+.  I should do a "hog" test one of these days when I'm out hunt'n.

BTW...I keep up with all of this on "Stopping Power.net" which is Evan Marshall's site.

I guess if it were all i could grab id feel ok with a 9mm too but its not and ive got the draw the line somewhere and for me its between the 9 and the 40. Only thing ill say though is in the last couple years theyve come out with some cool 9mm ultra compact guns. Some no bigger then a 380. theres times when a full sized or mid sized gun isnt practical and a pocket gun is. Right now i carry a 380 for that and no doubt one of the 9s would be worth looking at. Bottom line for me anyway is if im carrying a gun that needs to be put in a holster its going to be  45acp 1911.

Its some what short sighted to forget that bbl length makes a difference. A 40 S&W out of a say 5 inch bbl would in most cases give better vel than a 45 out of a 3 inch bbl thus in theory having more power if bullet was the same. the same can be true of a 9mm/40. So to compare "rounds " is somewhat slanted. In reality would you find a long bbl 9mm more useful than a 40 with a really short bbl ? Could you hit as well ? Would the 40 have the advantage with like bbl lengths ? And the all important but often over looked Can you hit and control with the larger round ? which gives you the best recovery time ? Much can be offset with pratice , who will pratice ? The 40 S&W addresses these concerns and in most cases for most shooters is the best compromise . One should also remember nothing beats cubic inches . So shoot as many cubic inches as you can control  ;)
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
