Mosin to .500 S&W?
« on: February 04, 2012, 02:42:27 PM »
Howdy,
I was wondering if anyone had tried this conversion. I saw a Mosin project for sale that already had a .45-70 barrel attached and brass turned down to fit the bolt head. The guy who started it passsed away and that seems to be the end of that story, but it got me to womdering, The rim of a .500 S&W is .007" smaller than a 7.62x54R rim. The case body of the 7.62 is about the same length as a .500.
So, what do you think? How much trouble would it be to screw a .500 S&W barrel to a Mosin-Nagant action? How would the magazine work? What about making the magazine work?
Actions and stocks are practically free, so this looks like the ideal Indiana deer rifle, if it can be done!

Bob, .500 S&W is a 60k PSI round.  7.62x54R is maxed out in it's military version at 56K psi.  I don't know if I'd want to trust that receiver to deal with full power .500 S&W loads or not.  Just a thought.  ;)

Agreed, i wouldnt trust 500s&w on a mosin action. That said, i would probably be interested in the parts/action. I want to build a 45/70 one next.

Check auctionarms.com for the project gun.
The pressure limits would preclude using factory fodder for sure. I just wonder what could be done with the cartridge in that platform, and how much trouble it would be to build.

If I had to have a big bore Mosin I would build a 444 Marlin. But for a special Indiana version, what about a 445 Supermag? Will that fit their rules? It still won't feed from the magazine but would be safe to shoot in that action, fit the bolt face, and certainly powerful enough to shoot a deer.

Howdy,
I looked at the .44 Mag, .45 Colt, .44WCF, and other large bore, low-pressure cartridges, and all had rims that were too small to fit the bolt-face without the bolt and extractor having to be modified. The .500 appears to be a perfect fit for the action as-is.
