I see no cons. You get more eye relief, .223 is not a kicker. I say it is a win win.

Parallax is usually set to a shorter distance on shotgun scopes. Rifle scopes without adjustable parallax are usually set to 100yd, shotgun scopes are generally set to 50yd if memory serves.
Other than that, I can't think of any cons.

if its the newer one with the bdc200 recticle the parallax is set at 75 yards , but on a 7x scope I dont think parallax would come into play much, as I understand it its primarily a concern above 10x or so, cant back that up but thats what little I understand of it.
mount it up, if it dont work itll be fun trying, shooting is always good

I've got the same Nikon shotgun scope on my 30-30AI Handi, no complaints at all, group shot at 100yds.

I use shotgun scopes on all my heavy kickers, and shorter range rifles. 45-70, 357 max. etc. Only on guns that I might want to shoot at longer distances do I worry about variable power, parallax, etc. The 280 and 223 fit this bill.

little bit of a compromise but will still work fine. Like was said your paralex will probably be set at 75 instead of a 100 but paralex really doesnt show up to out past 200 yards anyway. If you are getting more eye relief your doing it at the expense of a narrower field of view as theres allways a compromise with optics.

It should be a good combination except for the donut reticle - assuming it has one. You will have to work with shooters so they don't develope bad habits of not being precise in target placement. Shotgun scopes are made to handle heavy recoil. Nikon makes their shotgun scopes for slugged shotgun application and provide a 100 yd parallex in my recent experience.

Both my Nikon 2-7x32 shotgun scopes have the Nikoplex reticle, a standard duplex, that and the BDC reticle are the only options.
