Should I ream to 3 1/2"
« on: February 06, 2012, 02:22:02 PM »
Just got a 12 USH should i ream to the longer shell length? I am worried that the 3" slug loads will not be heavy enough for the pesky Texas Armadillos.

jeep,

If you rechamber you might want to fill the stock bolt channel with spent uranium to lessen the recoil. ;)   I have only seen one brand of 3.5" sabot slugs and I would be a little concerned about bullet jump if you shoot the 2.75" or 3" rounds.   On the other hand, if those Armadillos are causing that much of a problem then I would order the reamer. ;D

Some one posted on the rifle forum about a kid who took an armadillo with a 357 mag. Do you really need a 3.5" 12ga slug? I'm not recoil shy but I don't even shoot 3.5" turkey loads. Find what it shoots most accuratelly and stick with that.

I believe that a 3" shell should do the job on an armadillo...I wouldn't waste the money.  Who knows how long anyone is going to produce a load to fit that 3 1/2" chamber anyway.

I just want you to post a picture of that armadillo.  When I get rid of the lil yard doziers around here I use a .22 LR or my .410

I know things are always bigger in Texas.  But the thought of "armoured" Armadillos is actually scary.   In regards to the OP, I wouldn't unless your a glutton for punishment.  ;)

Thats road signs BB and after the 5th MT you can't even hit those.  However, back to the original question "should you ream out to 3 1/2 inches" and I say "I don't know why they went to 3"  Found a partial box of 4 - 1 1/2 - 4 shells in 2 3/4"   Was going to try them in my sub 5 1/2 Lb Partner, decided against putting it to my shoulder and fired it from the hip.  The recoil split my finger open from the plastic trigger guard.  That's only a 2 3/4 inch shell albiet 1 1/2 oz of shot behind 4 drams equiv.  Gotta find where I put that ole Stevens .410 and those 2 1/2" shells.

This is not a Handi but if those dillers are that bad it may be what you need. ;D
