CCW Wheel gun
« on: February 06, 2012, 03:16:31 PM »
My CCW battery is a Colt 1911 Night Defender primary, S&W M&P 357 Sig. FS and a Keltec PF-9 but find myself grabbing my wife's Smith 642 lately for around the house and trips in my town.  All guns are CT equipped.
Any of you guys carry revolvers for CCW?
Thanks,
Turk

S&W 642, Ruger LCR and a Beretta 21A Bobcat for when I'm in shorts.  I really don't trust semi-autos.  It's just me.

I like big guns over small and that is the reason I carry semi's mostly.
I do have a couple of gunbelts and holsters for the M28. They are more duty belt size, but they are concealable and comfortable. I just don't like rollers stuck in the pants--they shift too easily.
I am getting a shoulder holster---Rudy, do you hear me--for the M28 and that will do it for me for the rollers.

I reverted back to revolvers a while back after a long stretch of carrying the 1911's.  Smith model 36 prelock a lot of the time, 44 spl 5 shot 3" quite a bit. Sometimes both are close with one on me and one in the truck.  Single action sometimes in the truck instead, if it's Winter time I might be wearing the single action depending on what I'm doing and where I am.  I still love the 1911 type and some other auto's.  I don't go after bad guys for a living so for everyday living a revolver is just fine for me.

The last 15+ years I carried I preferred wheel guns for their 110% reliability (although my KelTec P-11 was nice to carry and very reliable).   All my wheelies for carry were 357MAG or 44SPL.   40 odd years ago when I first started to carry it was mostly semi auto's though, from 380's to 45's, and I always had one or two of them right up until I stopped carrying about 10 years ago.

Changing times and changing needs I guess.   I got my first permit in 1968 when living in the San Francisco Bay Area, a place with a need to carry, especially the East Bay.   Mainly to better protect my sweetie soon to be wife as we were "out on the town" into the wee hours more nights than not.  Then when I moved down the coast to Carmel a couple of years later the need to carry diminished, and even more so when I left CA a few years after that.  Fast forward to now days, and well, between where I've lived the last 14 years (Las Vegas) and no family for 10 years I don't feel the need to carry at all.   So I let my permit lapse many years ago.

;) I have several autos, but for me I carry a revolver 99% of the time...I do live in a low crime area, but one never knows...I suppose stray dogs, mt. lions, are more of a threat than criminals, but again drugs are everywhere...I used to pack a model 60 in 357, but my gal took that for hers, right now I am carring a model 19 with a 2.5 inch barrel..would have prefered a 4", but we had this one... ;)

Over the years the two most carried guns for me have been either my S&W mod 36 in 38 spl or my Taurus Tracker in 45 LC , both are 5 shot so an extra speedloader is a handy thing to have , I have put enough rounds down range with both of these guns to know that if I need them , they WILL work .

If I'll be driving alot, I'll carry an sp101 and 637 pro, j-frame. They're just more comfortable than the Glock 23 while in the car.

These are some of my carry revolvers.

The Top is my pocket carry S&W 642  , probably the best value in small frame 38 spl.

next is a picture of my Ruger Speed Six..2 3/4 inch barrel..that has had a action and trigger job..very smooth

This is a picture of my Charters..most likely my most carried revolvers...one is a 44 Spl. the other is a 357 mag...theses guns weigh in at 20 oz and both are 5 shots..

I carry a revolver, IF I am going to carry. I dont carry very often. It is kind of like that commercial for tires in Minnesota, "If these tires dont work for you, you dont need new tires, you need a new place to live". If you are in a place so dangerous you "need" to carry every day, you need to move. Any other response is simply someone who is somehow looking for trouble. I have never had to fire at anyone, and have had to draw a gun 3 times in almost 50 years. I have never needed one the other 16,000 or so days.
Here is the problem..... paranoia. Having a carry gun is not "paranoid", but.... you decide that a 6 round wheel gun is not enough, so you get a 1911-- faster reloads, more capacity. But 8 might not be enough, what if there are multiple assailants ? so you get a double stacker and go down to a 40, you now have 13 or more rounds, and a couple of spare magazines. BUT, what if you were disarmed? you need a backup! So now you also have an LCR or LCP, or a little 380 Walther in an ankle holster. But, what if they are in a more open setting, maybe farther away, so you had better have  a rifle or carbine available, in say a 223 AR platform with frangible bullets, that you keep in the car.......
The odds of being in some kind of altercation are slim, of being in one where a weapon could and would make a difference-- slimmer, of being in one where you become engaged in an extended firefigi,ht with multiple opponents---- you did know that OJ WAS innocent, right???? Occasionally carrying a weapon may be prudent, but being as prepared as the seals that went into Pakistan has NOTHING to do with self defense, there is some other psychological imperative operational there.
The great value of CCW is not to the individual primarily, it is the change in the psychological climate that occurs. It is the element of uncertainty that is introduced, the criminals risk has just increased exponentially. It is also the change in public attitude, from a fatalistic, we can only wait for help position to "we have the right AND the PRIMARY responsibility for our own safety. The personal weapon indeed makes a difference in an individual encounter, but the actual risk levels are driven by the attitude changes.
If  you want to carry whatever, that is up to you. Just take a good look at reality, carry what is comfortable for you, but you dont need a belt fed weapon......

I don't know a lot about paranoia but I do about life. Life happens in a nano and no amount of reaching can get it back.
I have always carried semi's because the are flat and conceal really well, don't shift when you sit or stand and are very manageable.
I do a lot of day trips---head out in a direction in the early morning and come back home early in the evening---relaxed.
I have a semi stuck in my pants all the time--on these day trips I also have a model 28 stuck in between the seat cushion and consol, for ease & speed of retrieval.
Blessings

Paranoia , ya right , I don't plan on a flat tire either . But I still carry a spare tire and jack in my truck , along with some kind of long gun , be it a shotgun or rifle .

As the TV add said " Life Comes At You Fast " and with that being said , when seconds count , help is only min. away , so I'll keep my carry gun handy and hope I never need it if you don't mind !  ;)

i try to be prepared for anything that comes at me....flat tires, bad weather, fires, medical emergencies, supply issues, and potential violence.
i have been taught that the only difference between paranoia and being prepared, is whether you are pre or post event.   before an event, you are paranoid.   post even, you were prepared.

I have packed a gun if some type for more years than I care to remember, most of the time it was a revolver.  Long before anyone even heard of concealed carry as we know it today I was packing either a model 10, 37 or 28.  They were large guns and hard to conceal, but inside the belt with a jacket or loose shirt rarely did people know I was carrying.  Today I have several guns to choose from when I carry, but it is mostly a small auto. With some of the materials they are using in the manufacture of guns today there are several really light weight revolvers to choose from if you wish to carry a revolver.

There are a lot of folks with the “large bore high capacity” mentality and they will only carry a 40 something with 12 rounds.  To a large extent I think it is foolish, first I doubt that you will ever get yourself in a gun fight where more than five-six rounds are fired totally, if you do you are stepping into territory that you should have avoided to begin with, and most of us don’t go looking for a battle. In aall proability you will go a lifetime and never have to pull your gun.

I like to think of handguns as a safety item to help me fight my way back to the pick-up to retrieve the Remington 870.

Personally, I like them both, and carry both. The Revolvers do a lot of nightstand duty, and truck carry. On my person, usually a 1911, Glock, with LCP in the pocket. There is no right or wrong in my opinion. More about what you feel best suits your needs, competency level, and confidence.

Revolvers for me. NAA mini 22mag, S&W 442, S&W 686, Ruger Bisley 44mag. I adjust for area traveled, weather, wardrobe, activity. The NAA and 442 go with me the most.

Usually either a 2.5" 19, or a 3" 66, but on occasion I've gone with a 3" 24-3, 4" 57. The 638 is always there, too.
