Hornet Bullet size question

All the reloading books that I have shows a 224 bullet size for the hornet but I have some Hornday marked 223 hornet and when I look on their web site they list the hornet in 223 so anyone know why the difference? I mike a winchester hornet bullet and it is 224.

In 1930 winchester came out with the hornet with a .223 bore . Today most make them with a .224 bore. If you are in the Hornady book notice that the next bullet lister #2240 is only different in dia .224 vs .223 . I would suggeat the .223 Hornet bullet is for older rifles .

Yep, unless your Hornet is real old it has a 224 bore. If you already have them load a few and try them. They will probly shoot well enough you won`t notice much difference I would guess. I have shot 223 bullets down a 224 bore with no problem in my old Hornet. I have a 411 Hawk with a 411 bore and it will shoot sub moa groups witj 410 handgund bullets. I load them for plinking.

Mine is a new Encore 24 inch stainless barrel and I tried one and the bullet was a tight fit in the barrel I did load up a few and they shoot well so I will only be target shooting with them anyway.

Me too. Ive shot alot of .223 bullets in my ruger hornet and theyve shot fine.

Hello, DEACONLLB.  The Hornet is one of the few cartridges that were introduced before any factory rifles were yet available for it.  Whelen, Wotkins, and others used re-chambered rimfires in it's development..one a BSA 12/15..Wonder where that one is now?  Remember, at this time..early 1930's, there were really only two standard .22 bore sizes: .223 for rimfire & .228 for the .22 Savage High Power. (the parent case for the Hornet, the Winchester .22-13-45 or .22WCF used a .226 bullet).

Going the other way.  I have a BSA Martini .22 Hornet with a .223 bore and I used to shoot .224 bullets in it with good results.  At least I did until the firing pin failed.  I'll probably shoot .224's in it again if I ever get it fixed.
