the .499 HE has only one issue, recoil.  Adding about 4 pounds to the Handi rifle should cure that "problem".  The price of conversion for a 50-140 compared to a .499HE is the tipping point for most. especially with the price of the dies added in.  By having the option of loading black (2Fg black powder) in the .499HE all other 50 cals seem to be in the also ran column.

Do I recall correctly that about 40-45ish ft.lb. of recoil is the 'typical' top level for normal humans to consider acceptable? Of course, we all know that there are a number of exceptional humans here on GBO  ;) .

The good thing about those recoil numbers is that we control them.
The 50/140 has a history that was written by someone else. The 499 hubel history will be written by you.

Dunno about what's acceptable, I think the typical level for most is well below that, somewhere around what a 30-06 provides. For my purposes, 385gr at 2400fps in an 8lb gun, probably a little heavier actually, provides about the same recoil as a 10ga shotgun.

Hmmm, wonder if 50-90 dies would work for the 50-140 much the same as 357mag works for 357 Maximum?

Regarding recoil, as I recall, 'they' say that a few repeat shots from a 3" 12 ga. is about all most want to feel (which is in that 10ga range, isnt it?) in a light platform like the H&Rs. I know my Buck barreled 12 smooth slugger is a vicious kicking beast.....and I go 6'1" x 205ish.; but I admit to being a 'sensitive fellow in touch with my gentler side'. Ive even been know to wear a pink shirt in public while eating quiche  ;) .

My 45-70 FL Die wouldn't work on my 45-120 brass the first time.  Had to get one full length resize with the 45-120 die and the after that the 45-70 die would "neck" size the fire 45-120 brass, well accept for a couple of cases that might have been a bit hot. :o

With the top cut off the 50-90(499HE) die it might just work tho, size the bottom of the case with the short die and the top with an unmodified 50-90 die, 50-90 3-die sets are ~$50.  8)

I just got a reply from Johan, the ballistician at Accurate Arms/Ramshot, he confirmed my AA5744 load predicted by Quickload is a good one for the 22" barrel!!  ;D

Got the barrel back from Ed this morning, made an extractor for it, annealed and sized 20 rounds of brass, made a dummy round with a 385gr Rem to check the extractor which works great, all I need to do now is figure out what scope to put on it for range work and load up some ammo, here's a pic of the dummy round with some brethren big bore rounds.  ;)

Decided to stick with what works, the Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 shotgun scope has worked well with the 500S&W for about 200 rounds so far, so I put it back on but changed the base to a Warne picantiny, I think the Leupold PRWs will work fine on a good base. I also marked the barrel this morning, almost forgot to do that before I mounted the scope!  ::) :-[ ???

Range report as soon as the weather cooperates!!  ;)

Shot it today finally, didn't get all of the loads shot, only about half of em, still have a lot of powder to burn in it, the last group was a little over an inch at 2001fps and each successive group has been smaller which is encouraging, that's less than half the size of the best group that barrel ever did as a 500S&W with any bullet, so the reduced pressure of the 499HE has some merit, although it's at the cost of increased recoil.  ;)

When you consider the bullets are 1/2 inch in diameter that 1 " group is a very nice one!!

When I get the best load nailed down, I'll shoot a 3-shot group, shooting 2-shot groups during load work saves a lot of powder and wear & tear on the gun.....and me, even in the leadsled it really kicks with me behind it. One thing I noticed is the report, compared to the 376 Steyr, it's a very big bore boom instead of a bang, even my wife could tell the distinct difference when I shot it! This is something I never noticed when shooting it as a 500S&W.

I checked the case capacity of the fire formed rounds, looks like I have lots more rounds to shoot to reach my max velocity and pressure goal, about 10grs more to be exact, the estimated case capacity was 152.5gr H20, it's actually 165.6gr, so more powder is needed.
