NEWBIE on the forum
« on: February 07, 2012, 01:01:13 PM »
Used the avatar to show a gun I'm curious about that was handed down from my Dad-8 X 57 JS.  No markings on the barrel, left side of receiver 4021 with M underneath and also CESKOSLOVENSKAZBROJOVKA, A S,BRNO.  Cartridge release clip on bottom has OJ touching and with J reversed with 4029 underneath and to the right 3 reversed with 28 underneath.  Any ideas?  Can't seem to find any good loads made by our companies.  I understand in America the loads offered are very light due to fears of ammo being used in the wrong specific guns.   Apparently in Europe the calibre has a good following and lots of availability.  Have a box of ammo less 3 fired to sight in a scope, purchased about 40 years ago, Norma 10.3 grams, 159 grains soft point round nose.

Someone on the military surplus forum a few down from this one, can surely help you.  Try posting there as well.  Good luck.

Thanks CP.  No big deal.  I have found ammunition listed several places at fantastic prices but most of it is the corrosive stuff, and almost everyone is always out of stock.  Weird.  The American ammo is loaded from 2500 fps way down to 2000.  I may just go to my 30.06 Winchester pump-pretty cool gun, light, fast, and hair trigger that was prompted by my file.  Not sure I can trust it but I will.  Also might get serious about .308 Palma that Lapua has introduced.  Brass and bullets are way under the .338, almost in reach of us poor boys.  I do know I want to go with Lapua brass, just because it's the best.  Haven't done any reloading in years, and it's amusing to find out that primers are still 3 or 4 cents, powder about how much, anyone,  brass close to a dollar, and bullets 30 cents to a dollar.  Am I way off on any of those?  Powder say in the 50 cent range?  No idea on that.  Some of the surplus rounds for the  8x57 run in the 25 cent range and even less in quantity-hard to fathom.  I may have to resign myself to cleaning the barrel after every session - should be no big deal.

Here is some Prvi Partizan 8mm mauser ammo with boxer primers....fairly decent ammo, European made and reasonably priced.  Have used Prvi ammo for shooting 7.5 Swiss, 7mm mauser, 6.5 Swede.

if hunting ammo is what your looking for norma makes probably the best 8x57 ammo for that purpose. One thing ill say though. If your going to get into odd ball stuff you might want to pass on buying another gun and buy yourself a loading set up first.
