Stoeger Elephant Gun
« on: February 07, 2012, 03:01:00 PM »
Recently saw a Flintlock from Stoeger , did a little research, found it was made in the late 50's , early 60's for the meat trade in areas where the citizens were no permitted center fire arms.
Seems to be about 10 gauge or a little larger.
Anybody have any idea what it might be worth?
Thanks :)

I don't have anything on Stoeger.  Other than being a large bore flinter, is there anything remarkable about the gun?  Is it rifled? Or is it a smooth bore "musket type" gun.  What does it have for sights?  Aprox diamentions might also help.  As would pictures.

Thanks

I remember them being in the Shooter's Bibles of the early '60s.  What I recollect they were wall hangers with Stoeger's descriptor being that they were for places like the Belgian Congo where the natives weren't allowed to own "real" guns, as already mentioned.  Going from memory they were cheap, around $16.50 when a Winchester 94, Marlin 336 or Ruger Blackhawk were listed at $87.50 msrp.  I'm not sure if I would want to shoot one without having my life insurance paid up!

I believe they were called African Trade Guns. Cheaply made, as they were sold to poor tribesmen. Probably mostly used to collect bush meat. A spear is a more reliable weapon for dangerous game.
Never let the people with all the money and the people with all the guns be the same people.
