Author Topic: Fixed up an ammo carrier for my sportster (Read 1218 times)

Well, after searching the web for a butt cuff, for the sportster, it became obvious that no one makes them for 22 rimfire. I had a spare, and took it to a friend that runs a shoe repair shop. He stitched it up for me and only charged $8! I was happy!

It will hold 32 rds. of 22s if I want to fill it completely up. Her's a couple of pics.

I've basically got the sportster all set up. Gonna test a little more different kinds of ammo. Right now it looks like CCI SV LR is going to get the nod. Next fall squirrels be very afraid....

While its not as quick.... Last week at the bargin cave at Cabelas, I grabbed two MTM cartridge wallets for rimfires. They will fit nice in the jacket pockets and keep ammo clean and seperated. Best part was 3$ a box price!!

I have used these for years for CF rifle in My pack but never knew they made a RIM Fire version...

I made up something similar for my brothers savage mod 24 .22 mag/20 gauge Restitched the first half to fit .22mag used piece of wooden dowel for stitching guide I think went it was finished it held half dozen .22mags and 4 20 gauge shells in the process of making one now in .22 lr for the kids single shot kinda of a fun project yours turned out great thanks for pics

Since I've gone to hunting with single shots, in the last coupla years, I've gotten to rely on the ammo carriers, ON the gun. I hunted elephant and cape buffalo, in Zimbabwe, last summer, with my son. I used a Ruger no. 1, and did my followup shots out of that butt cuff. No issues.

Something I used and liked allot when varmint hunting with my Contenders was a wrist cuff, it holds two cartridges. It is very fast as its right in front of you. (Shooting a handgun) but should be just as good with a rifle...

I haven't had a need for immediate reloads. But for use on or in dangerous game country. It would be a very good idea to have extra cartridges very handi!!

That looks like the perfect solution for my .17 sportster. I just need to find someone to stitch it up for me. might be a project for a raining day down the road. I think i even have a spare centerfire cartridge holder like yours kicking around somewhere in my gun room.

Adam, if you have a shoe/leather repair shop in your area, contact them. I took it to Tom, along with 2 rimfire cartridges for guides. He fixed it for $8, which was cheaper than me trying to stitch it myself and sticking my fingers with the needle!

Maddog, here is an old post of mine showing the same idea. I took a shotgun butt carrier and stitched the slots to hold the rimfire and 223. Great minds work alike huh?

I saw that post/pic. That's what gave me the idea to use one of my holders. Took it off my Ruger no. 1, 375 H&H, since I knew I wouldn't be using any time soon. Wanted to stitch it myself, but bifocals didn't want to cooperate.

Any thickish strip of leather (like left over belt leather) with a hole on top for a neck thong and holes to firmly hold the cartridges works great. Easy on, easy off, easy to load up and easy to grab and pull one out. I have found belt carriers to be often hard to get at, especially if wearing a longer than waist length jacket. Whip one up, I think you will like it (and no sewing necessary).
