Shows some potential...
« on: February 08, 2012, 06:57:43 AM »
Afternoon gents...

There was a thread here abouts going about a very beautiful, freshly refinished, pallet wood stockset. It was last week IIRC.

Anyhow, I got a chance to snap some pics of my pallet wood set showing some nice fiddleback. It was off my nickel 223, yea it's ugly green now but it does have checkering and aside from one finish only hickey, it's in good shape. I am strongly considering refinishing it blonde. No stain, just pretty wood. I always like the crisp cleanliness of Maple and this should come close.

What do you guys think?

Almost a "curly Maple"... I'm thinking it's a nice late winter project...

Timmy,
I don't know if it's that one or your Maple set. ( Probably the maple set) I have always like that since I first saw you post it!!

I could only hope it looked as good!!! That's a pretty stock set!

I'm sure yours will look just as good when you're "finished" with it.  ;D

It should turn out great. The grain will pop right out.

Use the same stuff the fancy deluxe muzzleloader rifle guys use to get the grain to pop on curly maple. Even if it isnt maple the cellulose structure will react the same way.

Somehow I thought that would come back to haunt me..........it is eluding me in recall just now, but there are wood 'treatments' which will enhance the grain variations more vividly than just staining. And BTW, I have preferred alcohol based stains over water based for some years too. Seems to me that I remember you can brush on a solution of household lye as a pre-treatment to stain, but it must be neutralized before proceeding. Info may be in the Dixie Gunworks catalog, they have a section with a bunch of 'old time' info. Hopefully I will remember where that reference of mine is, or someone else will, and get me off the hook!
