30-30 AI
« on: February 08, 2012, 09:33:12 AM »
Wanting to order a 30-30 AI from SSK. I think I want a 20" blue bull for my G2 carbine. I would like to shoot mainly 125 gr bullets but might sometime find a need for 150 gr. Can anyone give me any guidance, maybe some one has been there & done that? I will be using it for white tail most of the time....Thanks Rod

I use a Contender Super 14 in 30-30AI. I use 150 Gr. BT, Win. Primers, Win Brass & 3031 for a vel. just over 2400FPS, dang good for a 14". I like the longer bullet & it "carries" decent. You would get a good deal more with a rifle tube.

I havn't ran the 125's.

you pick the length and tell SSK what bullets you are considering and they will inform you what works best..

SSK would be a great source.

Also it makes sense to look at what TC uses to: http://www.tcarms.com/firearms/chart_encore.php

And Lilja: http://www.riflebarrels.com/products/caliber_twist_rates.htm
Scroll down on that one.

I am not bashful about advising a long tube on rounds like the 25-06, but you won't need a long barrel at all with this one, 20" would be great, but with no action length, a little more tube and you still have a short gun.

Good choice, you will love it, 20 inches is very handy, AI is great round!  I like 125 speers and ballistic tips; both shoot great out of my 16 inch barrel at around 2450 fps.

Thanks for the reply Graycg, I order the 20" 30-30 AI this week. SSK said it would be best in 1 in 10 twist when I told them I would like to shoot 125 gr bullets. Now  I will watch for the mail man(person) for 6 to 8 weeks. If you have any pet loads and the time please send , that would give me starting places....Have a good day..Rod
