is there a handgun scope that will draw more light?
« on: January 21, 2004, 04:20:02 PM »
i have a 2-7 burris on an encore 15" 308 barrel. a great combo as long as there is plenty of light. i had an eight point buck at 100 yd yesterday evening. i could see him well with my 50 mm binocs. but just couldnt see him well enough to get a good clean shot. just wondering if any one makes a handgun scope that draws more light for the last 10 minutes of shooting time.
                                                thanks

Short answer NO!

Longer answer. Scopes do not DRAW light. Scopes just like all other optical instrument transmitt light. They don't draw it or gather it or any of the other terms often used.

How much light is transmitted is a function of several things. Things such as how many air to glass surfaces. Light is lost at every one. How good the coating on the lens. How large the diameter of the internal lens are. These more so than the objective and eye piece are normally the limiting factors especially with variables. Quality of the glass used is important also. Both the material used to make it and how well it is ground.

It is not technically correct to relate brightness to exit pupil size as is often done. There are a variety of ways to measure brightness and none of them are completely accurate in telling you what you'll be able to see. Handgun scopes because of the compromises required to get that long eye relief will never be as bright as rifle scopes at the same power range.

The Bushnell Elite is about the best I've used under low light conditions. The Leupold 4X is also close. The Leupold 2X is one of the worst.
