Well I got off work a little early today and built my first box trap. I had some 3/4 plywood laying around so that's what I used. I think I may need to build my next ones a little bigger. This one is about 24" long 10" high and 9" wide, that was all the plywood I had. I tried to stretch it but it did no good, but it was a good learning process.  Ran out of daylight , so it will have to be set out tommorrow.
One good thing about working around new houses, there is plenty of scrape wood around, so all this will cost me is a little time. this one took me about an hour to build. the next ones sould be alot less time consuming. I guess the best thing is if my cat gets in it it won't break it leg. I hope!

Hello Bryan!

I am always curious about people's crafts.

What sort of mechanism have you rigged up for your box trap?  I take it you entice the animal into the box, then he trips something and a door closes...I got that part.... but, how does the trigger process work?

I am trying to them to come in for a tuna fish supper, at the back of the box.
I have see-saw type ramp and a metal rod attached to the ramp holding the door open. Once the front of the ramp goes down, the metal rod moves and releases the door.  I have the tuna fish placed at the back of the trap so it will have to come all the way in for the food. But like I said I need to mak my next ones a litter bigger.  I just ain't figured out how I will get the critter out yet, and if I get a skunk he will be there for a long time.LOL
I did set this trap this afternoon, so maybe tomorrow I will have something.
My cats are still out front so that's a good sign.
Bryan

I hope you could understand how it works.

Well the trap worked for me. I sure have got to make them alot bigger though.  It sure was fun to walk up and see that trap door shut tight. The only problem was, it was my cat. That goodness it's a live trap, I would have never heard the end of that one. It was kinda hard toget her out, but when she came, she went! My little girl never saw the cat leave the trap, she was going so fast.
I guess the best thing knowing it works.

Me too Fishy.  The first thing I ever trapped were cottontails using Game commision supplied box traps just like Bryan built.

Reminds me of my first attempt at trapping years ago when I was a little kid. We had an old hollow tree out back where a grey squirrel had a litter of little ones. I used the inside of one of  those old two piece minnow buckets(the part with the drain holes so the water can drain out),added some weight to the flip top so it would shut tight. Tied some fishing line to a stick, added some corn or bread(I don't remember which) in the bucket and proceeded to catch and release them little squirrels most of the day!My best catch was six at one time. Funny the things we used to do as kids before the VCRS,video games and cable T.V. were around!
