Ready to Rock!
« on: January 21, 2004, 05:54:09 PM »
Just wanted to say thanks to all of the folks in this and the other Encore/Contender Forum.  I've definately been bitten by the single shot bug and I am truly happy.  Now, when my wife finds out what Encoritis is and how many frames and barrels it will lead to . . .

My rig is finally set up.  SS Encore frame, Boyd Bros. Nutmeg Laminate grip and forend, 15" .308 SS barrel, Warne Maxima base and rings, and Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6X scope.  I'm starting to think of this thing more as a short rifle instead of a handgun!  HEAVY

I'll be heading to the range either tomorrow or Friday.  I only have two different rounds to try - Remington yellow box 147gr FMJ and some old handloads with the Hornady 130gr. Spire Point.  Range report to follow . . .

Your rig is very similar to my own.  I've been considering those Boyd grips.  Please post your impressions of them after you've shot it a few times.  I worry that they'll increase the felt recoil over the factory "rubbery" grips.  I'd like your input.  Thanks.

Desert Ram,

I have that set of grips and shoot a 7mm BR encore.  I am new to single shot pistols and I have to say that I was amazed at how mild the recoil is.  I don't know if its the caliber or grips or if either matter, all I know is that it shoots like a dream.  I think you would be happy with the Boyd's grips.

Hit the range today.  Temp was 47 degrees and a swirling 8MPH wind.

To sight in I started off with the Remington yellow box stuff.  At 25 yards I hit the bottom edge of the paper with the fist shot.  Cranked it up a bit and was close enough to the bull.  At 50 yards I shot two rounds that were about 2" high and 2" left.  The first try at 100 yards showed a nice vertical string (3 rounds) streatched out over 4 inches.

Even with the scope and mounts this round was nailing the web of my hand pretty good.  I was using a set of Gates shooting gloves that I picked up for $5 from Sierra Trading Post.  I don't think these are really that good of a shooting glove.  The seam of the glove falls right on the web of the hand - I think this is why I was starting to "feel the pain" there.  I think they'd make good shotgun skeet or trap gloves though.

For the next six rounds I decided to ditch the gloves and try my handloads.  There was no noticable difference in recoil between the two rounds but the palm of my hand felt much better w/o the gloves.  Both 3-shot groups were right at about 2 inches.  Not too bad for the first time out.  I feel confident that the barrel will probably get better down the road and some handload experimentation is definately in the works.

Recoil was pretty stout.  A little more potent than my Ruger SRH with hot factory or hot handloads.  I've never tried the rubber grips so I can't comment on the difference between them and the laminated ones.  I will say that about 25 rounds at a sitting is all I care to send down range from this set-up.  But, I DO LOVE THIS THING!!!

As far as not having the grip cap . . . I'm going to get one from T/C soon.  I don't think it looks bad w/o it, just want to protect the bottom of the grip.
