44 mag rifle-alliant 2400-240 grain xtp-speed?
« on: February 09, 2012, 02:54:14 PM »
hello;

purchased a marlin 1894s in 44 magnum to shoot cast bullets. today was the first time i fired the rifle.

anyone shoot a 44 magnum rifle using 18.5 grains alliant 2400, using a 240 grain hornday 240 grain xtp bullet????

shooting at the sheriff’s range and they will not allow a chronograph. goal was to sight rifle in for 50 yards. when all was done, able to shoot 3 shots into the 1” center square of the target at 50 yards.

same powder charge, ohause cast bullet, weight 258 grains, speed (?), bullets hit @ 3" higher than the horandy bullets at 50 yards. bullet is a plain base, swc keith style bullet. lee liquid alox for bullet lube, sized to .430”.

rifle had no leading or copper fowling in barrel after 12 jacket bullets and 18 cast bullets.
no sign of pressure with either bullets. from loading manuals, looks like 20.5 grains of 2400 might be the max for the rifle.

thanks for a any input.

  rp85,

When I first got my chronograph, I shot a few .44 mags through it with my Rossi 92. I used cast gas checked 240s and hornady xtp 240s, loaded with 21 grs of 2400.
I'll have to dig through some of my files to find the results, but I think they were around 1800 fps or so (20" carbine barrel) I did record 1519 fps through a Ruger superblackhawk with a 7 1/2" bbl on the reloading die box loads sticker, now I wished that I'd listed the rifle velocities there too.

Hope that gets you into the ball park, when I find the actual velocities I'll list them on this thread, I'm sure there in a notebook somewhere-Rvtrav

I've used the Hornady bullets with full power H-110 only. According to the book data you should get 1500 fps with your 2400 load from a carbine.

... Rossi 92. ... hornady xtp 240s, loaded with 21 grs of 2400.

+1  I use 20.5 -21.0 gr. in my 92 and Ruger SBH, and my hunting buddy uses it in his Ruger 44 Mag Carbine.  Extremely accurate in all 3.   ;D   Never bothered to put it over my 'graph though.   :-\   Maybe I will this year.

i started loading for the 240xtp at 19.5 accuracy was great at 50yds,moved to 100yds best i could get was about 6in,best i could figure bullet was running out of steam by then. started bumping the the charge up and accuracy improved greatly at about 1.5 to 2in at 100yds. sry forgot to mention i was using cci mag primers and 2400

I just this afternoon chronographed 200 grain XTP over 21 gr. of 2400 and CCI 300 primer shot from a 20" Rossi '92. They averaged 1730 ft/sec, but had a very high variance and left a fair amount of unburned powder in the bore. I think the charge is too light and I intend to try 22 gr.

This same charge launches a 210 gr. Sierra JHP at 1665 Ft/sec., so I will be interested in your 240 gr. data, as I have none. Also, any additional comments will be appreciated, since I am groping along the same path.

Edited to change 210 gr. data based on better statistics from a later chronograph session. (12 Jun 2012)

I must be using data no one else has.  My Hornady book sez 22.9 grains is max with 240 gr XTP bullets, and I use 22.4 grains to push 240 gr .431 dia plain base Laser Cast bullets to an honest 1,849 fps average, with a 57 fps deviation.  I am using CCI 300 primers, and Rem nickle plated brass.  This load was fired from an H&R Handi-Rifle with 20" barrel.  Sighted at 70 yards I can hold 2 to 3 inch groups from a kneeling position.
keep em talkin' while I reload

Maybe I am not as bad off as I thought. My ten shot standard deviation was 42 ft.sec, which I thought was pretty bad, but maybe it isn't.

Hornady lists 24.8 gr of H-110 as the maximum load for the 240 gr bullet resulting in 1800 fps
2400 max load is 21.5 gr for 1700 fps
