Talk about tough love!
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:02:24 PM »

A North Carolina dad's video lecturing his daughter for being spoiled — and then shooting her laptop full of bullets — received more than 1.8 million hits on YouTube.
His anger, according to the video, came after his 15-year-old posted on Facebook complaining about the chores she had to do every day.
“Hannah, you were grounded for about three months for doing something very similar to this, and I would have thought with a father that works in IT for a living, you would have better sense then to do it again. . . .” a man identified as Tommy Jordan said.
 Apparently, she didn’t.
After a four-minute long rant detailing “the most disappointing day” of life as a father, Jordan tells his daughter that things are about to get “much harder.” He then pulls out a handgun and asserts, “This right here is my .45,” and proceeds to fire nine bullets into his daughter’s laptop in the YouTube video that reached over 1.8 million views in just two days.
Since the video was posted, his Facebook page has become a continuous stream of updates detailing his daughter’s emotional state, his defense against criticism, and even a meek attempt at charity.
“How about we leverage all the newfound 15 minutes of fame for a good cause?” said Jordan in his Facebook post earlier today that links to the Muscular Dystrophy Association “Can a few of you 40-ba-jillion people help raise awareness and donate to a good cause?”
The newfound YouTube star has expressed some remorse in response to the “unwanted” fame.
“I’ll agree that wasn’t a good example of me as a father. I had been reading that post again and again for about an hour, sometimes in tears, other times so mad my hands were shaking and I was trying very hard to be civil in my message. I slipped in that and said a word I shouldn’t have. I deserve a little backlash for that, no doubt,” said Jordan in another Facebook post.

I watched it earlier today and my thought was, although he was pretty close, that was good grouping with the 45. Extreme punishment in my opinion, no. His heathen daughter needs to learn responsibility and respect. Some will paint him as a "gun toting psyco dad" but overall I thought it was justified and hilarious.

Only thing I could see wrong was, he lost round count... Understandable considering his anger "load." I'd make the kid get that trash outta my yard. You GO Dad!

I've heard all kinds of people saying this guy was wrong for publically posting this video on his daughters facebook page.

They are wrong.  His daughter publicly shamed him and his wife, disgraced them and extremely disrespected them.  He was fully within his rights as a parent to do what he did.

I hope this is a good wake up call for his daughter.  I remember several times in my young life where something I really like was sacrificed to the wood stove by my father as punishment for not doing what he told me to do.

This guy is a good example of how to give a wake up call to a kid.  Well done sir!  I just wish he would have used a 12ga. to destroy the computer!

Good going Dad.  My son Sky thought it was funny, he liked it.  Sky said "That Dad rocks".  Just for the record Sky has the same chores.

Saw it yesterday and commented on the facebook page.  With my southern upbringing, if I would have pulled something like that My mother would have put the thrill back in death and dad would have had to take a waiting ticket to get a piece of my butt with a belt or paddle.  Thats if there was anything left to wear out.

I'd have charged him with child endangerment if he had done nothing. Kids don't need any more friends they need PARENTS!!!

I've sent a copy of the video to my daughter as a warning.   ;D

As an aside, how many of you got payed for doing family chores when you were kids?

I don't know about you guys but I got a bed to sleep in, 3 meals a day and cloths to put on my back and that's all I expected or felt entitled to.  Anything I got beyond that, Christmas, birthdays, a little extra spending money now and then, was a bonus.

They only money I made mowing lawns, shoveling snow, etc. was when I did it at someone else's house.

BRETT. I got an allowace every week, 25 cents and yes, we all had chores. Kids today see chores as punishment instead of being their role in the family daily life. We as parents create brats like her. We GIVE them too much. Drive by a high school, look at all the new cars. Most kids have newer cars than I do. How many are paying for them?? We rode school buses, kids were only allowed to drive if they worked after school or had a dr appt. No reason for all these kids to be driving to school. Whose fault is it?? Kids don't NEED computers, cell phones, cars, ipods or any of the other fancy gadgets WE give them. Too many take these things as OWED to them, instead of being earned. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

He seems like some kind of nut. If the kid has some quirks, it's probably because she takes after her dad. Any blithering idiot could do a better job of conflict resolution with a kid.

Your right he should have packed the laptop with Tannerite and made the kid shoot it.

Before I turned 16 my parents sat me down and told me that they never bought a vehicle for my 3 older brothers and that I would be no different.  They helped me get a job.  I worked at a boarding stable for a show horse trainer shoveling horse dookie and feeding horses for 3 hours a day after school and one day during the weekend.  I rode the bus to work and my mom picked me up on her way home from work.  After that I was expected to help my dad around the house, do my chores and keep up with my schoolwork.

By the time I got my licence I had enough money to buy a small truck and fix it up to be reliable.  Then when I thought I had something that was all mine my folks sat me down again and told me that if my grades were to slip or I did anything that greatly disrespected or displeased them, they would take the keys to the truck I bought and I would go back to riding the school bus.

I thought that was a bit unjust, but looking back now I saw that they were just doing their job as responsible parents.  When i saw how this girl spoke about her mom dad and their employees, i blanched.  She's lucky her dad took it out on her laptop and not on her backside lol.

I would not have been so fortunate.

I saw that also. He  is extremely lucky he is not being charged with reckless endangerment, although he did nothing to actually " endanger" the child. What he did was display exactly the reason that child was like she was, following his example. He became enraged, not good, publicly , not good, actually publishing it world wide- thereby  displaying exhibitionist tendencies, seeking group sympathy, and on top of that he destroyed valuable property for no valid reason. He could have sold it, given it away, donated it to someone, but instead he displayed a completely juvenile response, wanton destruction simply because his feelings were hurt. Wonderful example of parenting, self control and restraint. On top of that, he involved a firearm, a deadly weapon which provides additional fodder for the anti-gun crowd, and I am sure that is what engendered the thoughts of Reckless Endangerment. If he had IT skills I am sure he could have given the machine a virus to "kill it" or better yet, put everything on dial-up so she could learn patience @ so many kbps. If he had done this to any adults computer, say his wifes, even if he had purchased it himself, I guarantee he would now be under a restraining order. If he had simply had a philosophy of work, tolerance and patience, and started ingraining that in the child by the time he started potty training he would not now have a problem.

I'll bet at the very least, he gets charged with discharging a firearm within an unsafe distance of an occupied dwelling. If you pause the video at the end, he is right off the back patio of a house. This guy is going to learn an expensive lesson and might even loose his Second Amendment rights as a result. There are several ways to accomplish something and he chose a bad one.

I agree with twoshooter.  If he and his wife had taught her discipline and respect from the get go, none of this would have happened.  I drew some flack from my older sister and her husband when our boys (her 2 and my 3) were growing up because they thought my wife and I were too hard on them.  My three are fine young men who are self sufficient and hard workers.  They are raising their children in much the same way they were raised.  My sister's boys, on the other hand, are still 30 something year old children who will probably never grow up and shoulder any responsibility at all.
I don't think the man in the video was too good of a parent in the first place, and still displays poor judgement.
Thanks for the stump

I think you guys might be right. It would have been a better lesson for them to film themselves donating the spoiled little brat's electronic gadgets to Goodwill or something and posting that instead of destroying it.

Then again a video like that woudlnt have got 15 billion hits on Youtube.
