Contender operating Pressure
« on: February 11, 2012, 04:18:42 AM »
I know it is probably a dumb question. What is the high end of the operating pressures for the original Contender frame? I see no carbine barrels over a 45-70. Would like one in a 358 winchester, or have one made. Is it time for a new gun?

Thanks
Lonny

Lon, It's not just pressure in the contender frame. They will take some full pressure rounds with small case heads, like the 223. But I've never seen the orgional contender offered in 358win. You will need the larger Encore frame for that one I do believe...  :o

Pressure is only half the equation, the other half is area of the case head. The 45-70 has a bigger case head but the max pressure of the 358 Win is almost double that of the 45-70 so the answer is yes, you'll need an Encore.

the closest you are going to get in a .358 for the Contender is the .358 JDJ based on the .444 Marlin case..www.sskindustries.com

Thanks for the help. Guess for now I will use an H&R for the .358 win. I can buy a new one and have it rebored all for around $550-$600. But will put an Encore on my list. ;)

I shoot a 21" barreled 375JDJ loaded with 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps I have shot deer and black bears with this combo and would not hesitate to soot out to 300 yards on big game including moose.
Stick with your Contender and get a 375JDJ or look for a used 35 Rem barrel send it into SSK Ind and have them rechamber it to 358JDJ.
From what I understand the chambers of the original 35 Rem barrels where not aligned very well resulting in poor accuracy so the 35 Rem barrels should be fairly inexpensive the bonus is these are actually one of the more accurate barrels T/C ever produced if you get SSK Ind to rechamber to 358JDJ you will have a accurate take anything in the States out to 300 yards combo...

Just checked with ssk , there rechambering I think is very reasonable , for the 30-30 to a 309jdj is only 95.00
