new (used) ultra 223.

Well I was gun shopping and came across a used ultra 223. I've wanted an ultra for quite some time so snagged it up. The gun locks up nice and tight. It has a 2003 serial number and an ejector barrel. Im gonna head to the range in the wind and snow today just to put some bullets through her. I bought some garbage bulk ammo to shoot to have brass for reloading.

I just got back from the range. Shot 50 rds of the bulk ammo. Shot surprisingly well! I definitely need to upgrade the glass from the cheap tasco 3-9x32. Had absolutely no issues with fail to fires or anything! I will post pics when I figure out how

Congrats man, I really have been having fun with the .223.  Mostly loading down at .22 LR or .22 Mag levels to develop my Ultra Squirrel Assinator!

I picked up a .223 Varmint version in a synthetic camo stock from Dicks back in early Dec for $171.00!!!!! and have fallen head over heels in love with this rifle.  I leave in the very early AM for a 6 day Coyote Hunt in the Allagash Wilds of Maine and its the only rifle I will have with me. 
 
As soon as I can I will get an Ultra with a 24" Bull bbl and top end optics. 
My H&R came with a cheapo 4-12 and rings and base (some sort of kit deal Dicks had) and I am shooting 2" groups at 200 yrds with 64 grn ammo.  To say the least its a far better shooter than I am.  Even with the low cost optics this 1-9 twist can deliver.  Happy for you.  They really are wonderful rifles.

The 223 is generally a shooter!  I have had four, from std weight barrels to Ultras to HB modles, all where good shooters, my current Nickel HB is a great shooter!!

My HB .223 was my first handi and still my favorite. Dont discount that bulk ammo too much. I had a friend give me a couple hundred rounds because they wouldnt shoot very well out of his mini 14. So far it has provided some of the best results out of my handi for factory loaded ammo.
 
cwlongshot-if you dont mind post some pics of your nickel heavy barrel .223 or point me in the right direction if you have posted before. Just so happens I have a nickel hb .223 and would very much like to see yours. Thanks.

I hear ya. My gun collection is getting pretty high up there in numbers, and it seems like I shoot something a little different in everything.  ;)

Anybody got any suggestions for a budget friendly scope? I was checking out the bsa sweet 223 on sale at sportsman guide. Just got done loading up some hornady 55 grain vmax behind 27 grains of varget. Gonna be a week before I can get out and shoot them. In the mean time Im gonna work up some other loads and hopefully have the new glass on her.

I have one of there air gun scopes on a springer and its been fine... pop has one oh a 17HMR and loves it... Its a cheapie amd as long as you dont expect too much or need light gathering or quality optics. it will likley do you just fine...

I look for good scopes on "elite deal gunstuff".  Have found several used quality optics are about as much as new low quality.  Just fyi...

Oh, my 223 came with a Swift 4-12.  Not a bad scope.  Try Hawke... better than BSA I think.

Thanks, and as a bonus since mine needs a new stock and I planned on getting a laminated one like you pictured, now I know how good its gonna look. ;)
 
And so I dont hijack this thread without helping the op, Ive got a bsa 3-9x50  that I purchased for $60 at academy sports. By far the clearest "budget" scope I have ever purchased. I originally had it on my .223 but have moved it to my .22 hornet. I will purchase another one for my .223 when the time comes.

I've had great luck with the 6-24x42 Tasco Varmint/ Target scope. Had one on my "hogged out" 10/22 for four years. Never had a problem and never lost it's zero. I just picked up another one (both from Optics Planet) for my new .223 H&R. Some people don't like them (or Optics Planet) but they've worked great for me. I mounted them both on DNZ mounts.

Most of my Handi's are scoped with Simmons Whitetail Classics from Midway @ 6X24X50 (I think anyway). Optics are bright/clear but the reticles are huge. They've suited my purposes very nicely so far.
On my 243 HB sits a Nikon Buckmaster (4.5X14X44 SF) which is quite nice also.
All are mounted on Burris Z rings.
