Cheaper new bow or good used bow?
« on: February 11, 2012, 12:56:32 PM »
I am moving from colorado to kansas city area and will be hunting in the missouri/kansas area. I bowhunting one seaosn and it was depressing. The season was less than thirty days and I could only hunt 12 days of it.
I sold my old PSE typhoon and bought a 7mm magnum and have been pleased with that decision anyway.
I want to bow hunt in the area but only have about 400 bucks ot work with. Would you reccomend buying a used bow or a new bear bow?

I'd look used myself. Honest to God though, the power of the bow lies in between your ears. You gotta hunt not shoot.

That PSE typhoon blew up on me and then on a guy that I tried to sell it to. Im sure PSE is great, but this one alomost killed me. I'd consider a good used one for 400. What brands and models could you reccomend?

Me? I'd look for a good Hoyt were I in the market for a compound. But there are plenty of well made bows out there. I suppose I would avoid the super speed wonder bows. Like high performance autos they attract the sort that will run them wide open till failure or replacement with the next sensation.

I shoot a stick though so you might be best off ignoring my thoughts.

are yu shooting with a release or fingers?its very hard to find a fingers bow anymore. most bows today are too short axle to axle to shoot with fingers. there are some good bows of both kinds in most any pawn shop really cheap.a new bow loses 100 buks in value before yu hit the end of the bow shop driveway.

Release, not fingers and yes, I am looking forward to a long bow season. In colorado, you get about 28 days. Is missouri and kansas like colorado in that there arent alot of available places to hunt? We only ever doe and cow hunted as the meat was more of a priority. If anyone knows of a good place to cull does in the perimiter of kansas city area, let me know.

well i cant speak for kc area as im about 3 hrs south of there. but what i do know is that lots of farmers will let you bow hunt if yu present yourself well and ask.i know tons of guys that will let yu bow hunt but would not even think about letting a gun hunter in.it is hard to find a place to hunt if your not part of the community.if you can find a farming comunnity south of kc and maybe hit the local cafes and make yourself known as a good guy and talk to the guys and get to know them, they might let yu in.ive lived in farm country all my life and have plenty of land and know how they think.

hillbill, that really cool to hear. In wyoming/colorado, you can know them your whole life, like them and they can like you but since people pay huge amounts for leases, your never getting on private land. Good to hear thats at least possible.
I am anxious to hunt whitetail as I hear they are plentiful. The mule deer along the front range have really taken a big hit. There are so few tags compared with 7 years ago.

Buy a used one a couple years old, like buying a slightly used car, let someone else take the depreciation. You can get a great used bow for a good price. Sometimes you can find one rigged pretty nice. I'd say the deer in Mo should be easier to pattern and get close to than out west. Good luck!

I'd look around for a new bow, but a previous year's model. A few years back, I picked up a year old (but new) Pearson Pitbull. Bow was regualr priced at $599, I got it for $250 IIRC. This past summer I found a Limbsaver DZ-30 for $399, marked down from $699. Both are two of the best bows that I have shot.
Many people want the lastest and greatest, fresh from the factory and the dealers are willing to cut the prices pretty well to get the older models out. Just like cars.
Good luck.

I am shooting a bow I bought used.  2008 Bowtech 82nd Airborne.  I got a steal on it and am very happy.  I am now a Bowtech fan.  There are sites online where guys sell their last monts bow to get money for this months.  You find good deals there.

The best case scenario for buying a used bow is to buy a Mathews from the original owner. The bow is under warranty for life to the original owner. Bow breaks, have the original owner send it to the factory for free repair.
