Simple Things
« on: February 11, 2012, 03:00:31 PM »
I have always appreciated the simple things in life. Even more so now that that I'm getting older. One of my favorites is to watch the sun come up while drinking a good cup of coffee. Be it standing in my front yard or drinking it from a thermos while on the water or in the woods, it's just special to me. I guess another would be sitting around a campfire with a good friend and talking about good old times and good times to come. The rat race seems to get put on hold for a little while I'm doing these.
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die the world cries and you rejoice.

Agreed Sir. I have a spot in the woods where I have an old  bucket. I enjoy going back there when we get a good snow and kicking a hole in the snow and building a small fire. So peaceful just sitting on that bucket and feeding the fire and enjoying the cracle and warmth. Patty always thought I was nuts for doing it til last winter. I built a fire and let her sit on the bucket feeding it twigs. She said on the way back to the house, I don't think you are nuts anymore. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I understand completely. my camping was always in the winter with a good fire.  I guess we're closer to the cave than we think.
wife and daughter have lowered the boom on me. no more camping alone.

Several of our kids asked, why do you do that?? I say, because I can. Even though I've tried to teach them I don't think theres a 1 of them who could go to the woods and start a fire in the snow. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Took Sky Caribou hunting last year.  He had the most enjoyable time since he was small when his Mom and I took him Moose Hunting.  He has been too busy with school, since back then.  Now he is talking about going Bear Hunting this spring.  He will make the time.  Sitting there watching the sun come up and the light race across the valley was something he had never seen.  Now he wants to go see it again.

When we were dressing the Caribou last year, Sky called it a dissection.  Biology major coming out.

Sent a .22RF and a youth size H&R 20ga to my oldest son so he can take his daughter Turkey Hunting this spring.  She is 10, time for that to start happening.  Let her enjoy the simple things of just sitting and watching the sun come up.

I think my most memorable sunrises, while not simple, was in the New Mexico dessert.  Get up an hour before sunrise, saddle the horses, eat breakfast, then head out for round-up.  Stop on a rise looking out over the Tularosa Basin, and watch the sun rise above the Sacramento Mtns.  My wranglers would sit there in awe, then tell me all the vivid colors crossing the sky.  Even thou I could not see the colors it was still beautiful.  I could tell it was not a normal sunrise, like I saw back in Tennessee.  As we watched the dessert, we could see the glint of sun shining off the coats of Wild Horses, Oryx, and Antelope, scattered across the area.  You can only see that at first light.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I'm like the guy on the Turkey Hunt.  Being an avid Turkey Hunter, I can appreciate his thoughts.  How many times have I stood before daylight, waiting for it to get light enough for a Turkey to annouce his presences, and listened to the woods come alive with the breaking light of a new day.  To me, it is the most relaxing thing I can do.  I'm not worrying or thinking of any problems in my Life at that moment.  What a feeling I have at that point in time.

This is not an abnormal time for me toget up, it is 2:30 AM, and I have apot of coffee going. I will take my morning coffee on the back porch of this suburban home of mine. Talk to the Lord and give thanks for His blessings and let Him talk to me.
No magnificant sunrise, snow or wildlife--other than the neighborhood cats stalking in the hedges--and just enjoy what the Lord has given.
Family, with honory and honesty, memories of friends and family that have crossed the river.
What a joy in Christ.
Blessings

Getting out in nature has to be my favorite times.  My favorite mode is in a kayak.  I was out on the river yesterday dodging seals and sea lions, watching eagles, swans and all sorts of other water fowl.  It gets even better in the summer when the long days allow for longer trips.

Young folks have a hard time realizeing that when they are "bored" they should be learning to be at peace with themselves and the world, to be quiet inside. A good time to start learning to appreciate the "simple things"

Now, when I do go to the woods with a gun and am setting in a good comfortable position and the sun is just breaking through the trees and falls on me and I can feel the warmth, my eyes get heavy and deer come in cautiously. Why would I spoil that with a big ole KABOOM.

I enjoy hiking to the top of a mountain.  If its cold I find a sheltered spot in the sun or build a small fire and if its hot I find a patch of shade.  I kick the cones and rocks away so I have a comfy place to sit, listen to the wind through the pines and watch eagles and hawks sailing on the thermals.

This completely drains my body of worries or cares.  I have been know to enjoy a nap on occasions.  When there is just enough light to get down from the high country I know its time to go.

I have a young friend ( You know you're getting old when you call a 39 year old man your young friend ) that used to be pretty high strung about things. After hanging around me for the last 14-15 years he has a whole new appreciation for the simpler things. He has shared the sunrise, that cup of coffee and a campfire with me on many occasions now. He'll talk the need for simplicity to someone in a heartbeat these days.

My best friend and hunting buddy died of pancreatic cancer, it has been about 8 years now. It was slow and very painful, and I sat many months with him. I had a friend last year I played golf with on saturday and he had a headache. He went to the dr on monday, they said he had a tumor. Took it out successfully on thursday. Saturday a blood clot came loose. Had the funeral on tuesday. All this stuff..... just fills time. I will take my retirement as early as I can and survive on it. It is easy to get wrapped up in petty things, they can be entertaining. Just remember the important ones. G nite all.

I live on the western edge of the Llano Estacado. No woods to go out and sit in for a lot of miles. That doesn't keep me from enjoying the outdoors. Some of the sunrises and sunsets are spectacular and some are blah but I enjoy them all. From the early spring to late fall I begin most of the mornings with a cup of coffee sitting on the patio in the dark and watching the world wake up. I make it to northern NM or on into Colorado every summer and enjoy the same start to the day for a few weeks. It's beautiful there but honestly I'm always glad to get back to the plains where I can see. I get to feeling hemmed in where I can't see for a long distance.

oldandslow, I know I'm getting off subject here for a moment but something you wrote struck me as funny. I guess it's what you get used to but I was a trucker for about 17 years and the first owner/operator load I hauled was from Gadsden, Al to El Paso, Tx. West of Dallas and on to El Paso there just aren't many trees. By the time I came back thru there I was so glad to see a tree I could have hugged it. By that time I had seen all the cactus and mesquite brush I wanted. The Pecos Mountains were pretty though.

Something I and a few friends would do is canoe down the Allegheny river from below Kinzua dam to a point between Tidioute and Tionesta. The river flows through the Allegheny mountains and canoing down the river was a great experience, and I recall that experience often. Now that I and my friends are older, just sitting down and talking about things we used to do is about as much fun. Well, not quite as much fun, but enjoyable.

Something else that is at the top of my list is going to camp for bear hunting, with family and friends. I could care less if I get a bear. Shooting a bear is the last reason I go. Its all about spending time with my sons, other family members, and friends. Enjoying the outdoors goes with that also. Its amazing how long you can sit and watch a mountain stream flow down through a hollow thats spotted with mountain laurel, pines, and hemlock. Add some snow cover, and the unconsciousness becomes deeper. Maybe that is why I never see a bear.

Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants.    Wm. Penn
