New Or Upgrade
« on: February 12, 2012, 11:22:08 AM »
I shoot a falling plate match.  Today we were talking about what would be the perfect rifle for the match.
I think I want a new rifle to play with.
I have three 10/22's  one a Target model with a 3-9X40 scope.
I have an old plain model that I can up grade to a match barrel and the Archangle stock.
I am thinking of  tactical style rifle for the match.  Levers, Pumps and Bolts are not fast enough to shoot.
I tried a bolt today and was not able to get more than 4 rounds off before the time ended.
The new rifle I want ot use a 4X red dot.
Since all of the options above are about the same in dollars I am going ot let you guys pick what I buy.
The Poll runs for 60 days and at the end I will be headed to the store.
I am leaning to the Sig or the S&W 15-22 but I wanted your opinions and comments.

This is just me, and my way of thinking, but, I would do this: Of all the AR-15 style firearms now being offered, I would get one that you could use any of the aftermarket AR-15 part in it.

Some of the AR's now being manufactured by large gun companies, are beginning to use proprietary parts and I feel that that limits their usability. For me anyway, it sure seems like a very limiting factor.

I just bought a LWRC AR-15 carbine and even though it was expensive, I like it immensely.

I think I would go with the S&W. I've shot my son-in-law's some and it's pretty accurate with the right ammo. Trigger is heavy like the real AR's but it take the same parts. A set of reduced power JP springs makes a big difference for 10 bucks. $120 gets you the adjustable JP trigger.

I have a real AR, I can get a 22 Upper for it.  But I think I want a rifle rather than a part.  Ca is notan AR friendly place, Mine had to be registered as an assault rifle.
One of the guys I shoot with puts in a action kit and shoots 22 LR out of his.  I do not want to do this as I am worried about leading the gas tube even with using copper washed bullets.
But thank you for your opinion.

Thanks for the input I will count you as one for the S&W.

If I were going for a dedicated competetion gun this one has adjustable pull and a semi-tactical stance, but comes with target trigger and heavy barrel.  ;)

OK,
But the targets are 6" steel disks.  we start out at 35 yards and move back to 50 yards.  Why I was thinking of 4X red dot or, a 4X scope, or a 2.5 -7 Weaver V7.
I was shooting my open sight 10/22 and did not do bad everyone else was shooting optics and I still came in 4th.
The shoot is also a No Aliby shoot.  Timer starts and ends how ever many you knock down is your score.   If you forget to load, remove the safety, dud round, mag failure, what ever excuse you can come up with fall on deaf ears.

CZ----thanks for trowing a wrench into my gears----has a good looking .22 or .22 mag in a semi----I think that CZ rifles are pretty well touted.
It is inexpensive enough.

MC
I can't be down on anything CZ as I don't own one. I do hear good reports from the CZ crowd.
Accuracy on the bolt guns has been reported to be very good.
Your thread just got me to thinking about a semi in the mag,
Now I was/am really considering a T bolt by Browning as I really don't like any traditional bolt operation---well in the rim fires---big bores are another question.
From all I read, CZ is very good in all departments.
Sorry, did not mean to try and hijack your search.
Blessings

I do have two Cz rimfire rifles and one center fire.
I am very happy with all of them.  If you are looking for a Bolt action the 452 Varmint is hard to beat.  Good looking, accurate and feels like a real rifle.  The bolt is in the right spot.  You can shoot from the bench or bipod and cycle the bolt looking down the scope, I have problems reaching the bolt on my Marlins (also very accurate)
This purchase is more of a toy for this shoot and maybe another.
I was looking at some at them at a local shop.  I really want the Sig but the folding stock seemed to flex.  And was hoping to get some information on the rifles.

I do agree with you on one thing completely.
I do like whole guns---not two in one. When I want a gun I don't want to configure it.

The S&W 15 is a great gun. I have shot one quite a bit and love the feel. Getting ready to buy one for myself. Seems very accurate and from your description, it would work perfetly for what you want it.
