Anyone shooting a 1-66 RB barrel
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:23:53 AM »
I have a TC custom shop 50cal 1-66 RB only barrel. Do you guys recommend a .490 or .495 ball?

you'll have to determine the size of the barrel and how easy it loads.
mine loaded best with a .490 ball and a .015 patch.  good and tight.
but a .495 ball with the thinnest patches almost took a hammer to to load.

I agree with Bugeye. I tried a bag of .495" balls and they were a nightmare to load. If I had been hunting with them it would have been hard to load a follow up shot very quick.  I would stick with .490's and play the patch thickness.

I have enjoyed great accuracy using the .490 RB in several of my .50 calibre rifles. I have had only one that shot the .495 with excellent results.

My .50 caliber Traditions flintlock "Shenandoah" Long Rifle (33.5 inch barrel, 1:66 twist)  shoots 1.5 inch, 5-shot groups at 50 yards from the bench using a Hornady .490" swagged rifle ball, a 16/1000ths denim patch lubed with a mixture of bee's wax and liquid Crisco cooking oil over 47 grains of FFFg Swiss.

My 2 older .50 caliber CVA Hawken cap-locks (1 with a 24" barrel & 1 with a 28" barrel)  like the same 47 grain FFFg Swiss powder load, patch & lube... and shoot this load quite accurately as well.  However, the 47 grain load is my "accuracy" load.

The 47 grain load is my "accuracy" load for target shooting, etc.  My "hunting load" (out of my deer rifle, the 24", 6˝ pound .50 caliber Hawken percussion cap rifle) is 65 grains of FFFg Swiss with the same ball, wad, lube plus a .060" vegetable fiber, over-powder wad to eliminate any possible leakage of lube into the powder if the rifle is left loaded for several days in a row.

It seems the "limiting factor" to my accuracy at 50 yards is due to my 76 year old eyes rather than anything to do with the rifle or the load.  I say this because at 25 yards where I can better SEE the target as well as the front and rear sights, this same load shoots 3-shot groups into one fairly small, ragged hole off the bench.

While I would never put a scope on the traditional ML rifle, all my modern rifles have scopes on 'em due to my age and eyes.

Jus'  my 2˘...   :)

I've had good accuracy with a .490 ball wrapped in a .010 patch in my custom flinter. Donno if it's really pertinant  to your question because mine has a Jap made barrel from Dixie Gun Works.

I shoot a 1/66 twist PA Hunter flintlock. It's just their standard barrel and it has .010 deep grooves. I have found the .490 ball with a heavier patch to be snug to work much better than a .495 and a thinner patch. The .495 ball seemed to cut the patch when loading because it was too tight and a thinner patch would burn thru with a 90 grain load of powder. In general I believe a .490 and patch up is a better way to go. Just my opinion but everyone has try different components for themselves. I know in my experience the lube and amount of lube is a very important part of your mix of components as well. Test away.

Plus 1  on that I had the same problem with my round ball barrel, but it is a great shooter

I have the Penn Hunter caplock in 1-66 with deeper rifled barrel(cut?) and a standard Hawken button rifled 1-48.The Penn and Hawken shoot the same accuracy wise(5 shots into 1.5" at 50 yards when the eyes see the sights well enough) but the Penn shoots with 90g but the hawken opens up once i go past about 60g.I use a .495 and .015 patch in the Hawken and .490 in the Penn. The Hawken shoots worse with the smaller ball and the Penn shoot well with both but is harder to load with the bigger ball and the patching i generally use.

(groups shown is one of the better ones but not totally uncommon in my TC 54 and 50's with PRB)
