My .50 caliber Traditions flintlock "Shenandoah" Long Rifle (33.5 inch barrel, 1:66 twist) shoots 1.5 inch, 5-shot groups at 50 yards from the bench using a Hornady .490" swagged rifle ball, a 16/1000ths denim patch lubed with a mixture of bee's wax and liquid Crisco cooking oil over 47 grains of FFFg Swiss.
My 2 older .50 caliber CVA Hawken cap-locks (1 with a 24" barrel & 1 with a 28" barrel) like the same 47 grain FFFg Swiss powder load, patch & lube... and shoot this load quite accurately as well. However, the 47 grain load is my "accuracy" load.
The 47 grain load is my "accuracy" load for target shooting, etc. My "hunting load" (out of my deer rifle, the 24", 6˝ pound .50 caliber Hawken percussion cap rifle) is 65 grains of FFFg Swiss with the same ball, wad, lube plus a .060" vegetable fiber, over-powder wad to eliminate any possible leakage of lube into the powder if the rifle is left loaded for several days in a row.
It seems the "limiting factor" to my accuracy at 50 yards is due to my 76 year old eyes rather than anything to do with the rifle or the load. I say this because at 25 yards where I can better
SEE the target as well as the front and rear sights, this same load shoots 3-shot groups into one fairly small, ragged hole off the bench.
While I would never put a scope on the traditional ML rifle, all my modern rifles have scopes on 'em due to my age and eyes.
Jus' my 2˘...
