I may be an idiot, but . . .
« on: February 14, 2012, 01:28:01 PM »
As much ranting as I've done about the fail to function potential of 1911's, I got on the list today at a local dealer for the new Ruger.  I was at the range earlier in the day shooting my 9mm when a fellow arrives with a brand new never fired Ruger 1911.  He let me handle it.  Then he invited me to shoot it.  I told him no, I wouldn't shoot his new never before fired $799 (that's what he paid) gun until maybe after he'd tried it out.
He shot it a while.  Flawless.  Handed it to me.  The range has a metal man at 150 yards for rifle shooters.  I put the front sight on the head and rang the target, off hand.  All the firing afterwards was without a fail to function.  Smooth trigger, great sights, and beautiful wood.
So, I'm committed to getting one.  On the list.  If it jams I'll be back here to rant some more.

1911 Ruger is a nice pistol.  One thing about the 1911 FTF - you can get it back up & running in a couple seconds or less 99 out of 100 times.  Get a FTF with your revolver and 70 times out of 100 you'll be taking it back home or to a gunsmith to get it back up & running.  Get a half dozen Tripp mags and you'll probably be a happy camper for life with that 1911.

A 100% flawless cycling 1911 is possible i have 4 of them running awesome.  Get it and run hardball in it to break it in.  If you have problems ask here we'll fix it.
Having a 1911 thats not operating flawlessly is totally unacceptable.

When my 90's SA was stovepiping 1rd per 8rd mag i did get very fast at clearing it and rechambering it.  But i did find out the extractor needed to be tuned.  Now its 100% flawless in operation.  Its funny i waited over 20+ years to finally fix it and i did it in a few minutes.  I should of purchased the gunsmithing 1911 dvd's a lot sooner. I don't think i have a box or two of ammo thru it since i purchased it.  Soon we'll hammer it thru the 250rd test.

I have never really had FTF problems with a 1911 ?
Just buy good mags. You get what you pay for with mags.

Six or seven years ago , I had a Springer GI that developed a "failure to extract" problem.  That was a serious problem....it pretty much took ya out of the fight.  Generally it had the fresh round jammed up against the expired round so hard...ya actually had to dig it out.  I ended up testing Springfields warranty out....it was repaired , and shipped back to me ( they reimbersed me for my shipping cost also )in three weeks.  It still threw brass everywhere , including down my shirt , but never failed me after that.  On the packing slip , all they said was  : it was repaired.

regards , irold

S.S. & Mikey;     You guys always say its the mag or the extractor.  But try the mag first.   I purchase only the chip mcormic mags now.

I would be interested in the gunsmithing CD. Would you happen to have info on how to find it, or a link? Also, does it pertain to just the 1911 or what types of guns? Thanks

Yer never an idiot for wanting a good gun, a good woman, a woman with a good gun, or a woman good with a gun. You should get a great woman for a good gun and a great gun for a good woman... yep, that 'bout covers it.

No sir, you're not an idiot.  But for some reason you've been deluded into accepting a false premise that 1911s are less dependable than other designs.

Down here in Texas we have some 1000 rnd competitions.  Not only do you have to be the best shooter (fastest while maintaining accuracy) you also have to have a gun that will run 100 rounds without maintenance.  If it malfunctions you are done.  A 1911 has won it every year.

We have a few videos of 1000 rnd shoots- one is a G19, the other a Para 1911.  The 1911 completes the 1000 rnds without malf (less malf? I forget), the G19 malfs (malfs more) and eventually melts it's guide rod.

When we compare apples to oranges (like quality of manufacture or 1911 to like quality of other you won't see less dependability; 1911s are just more expensive.

Now, you might be an idiot for getting the Reminton... j/k friend.

You can have an awesome running 1911 no problem.  My norc is running smooth like a straight 8. What a sweet weapon the 1911 really is.
