As much ranting as I've done about the fail to function potential of 1911's, I got on the list today at a local dealer for the new Ruger. I was at the range earlier in the day shooting my 9mm when a fellow arrives with a brand new never fired Ruger 1911. He let me handle it. Then he invited me to shoot it. I told him no, I wouldn't shoot his new never before fired $799 (that's what he paid) gun until maybe after he'd tried it out.
He shot it a while. Flawless. Handed it to me. The range has a metal man at 150 yards for rifle shooters. I put the front sight on the head and rang the target, off hand. All the firing afterwards was without a fail to function. Smooth trigger, great sights, and beautiful wood.
So, I'm committed to getting one. On the list. If it jams I'll be back here to rant some more.
No sir, you're not an idiot. But for some reason you've been deluded into accepting a false premise that 1911s are less dependable than other designs.
Down here in Texas we have some 1000 rnd competitions. Not only do you have to be the best shooter (fastest while maintaining accuracy) you also have to have a gun that will run 100 rounds without maintenance. If it malfunctions you are done. A 1911 has won it every year.
We have a few videos of 1000 rnd shoots- one is a G19, the other a Para 1911. The 1911 completes the 1000 rnds without malf (less malf? I forget), the G19 malfs (malfs more) and eventually melts it's guide rod.
When we compare apples to oranges (like quality of manufacture or 1911 to like quality of other you won't see less dependability; 1911s are just more expensive.
Now, you might be an idiot for getting the Reminton... j/k friend.
