Hey guys just to let you know I am ordering a custom reamer for my rimmed 308 base case project.Now I need to figure out which one I do first.......... 243 , 7-08 ,308 , 338 (requires stub) , 358, 375 (requires stub) so many choices .......

I have not checked, but are they not all the same ?? The shape and size of the reamer should be a case web sized pilot, the rim cutter, a flat base that would stop the ream as soon as the rim depth is reached. Or did you just mean which should you actually ream first ? I would say since the 307 brass is available already, go with the 308 and so you can run some tests and see how it works. I suspect where you lead many will follow.

Why order a reamer, you just cut the rim on the lathe when you cut the chamber.  I have done a bunch that way.  Larry

I don't have a .243, mostly because I was turned off by a Rem. 6mm years ago and went to the .308.  Perhaps it's time to reconsider.  Your post leads me to believe it is possible to size a .307 case down to .243.  Is that correct?  If so, I assume it would be done the same as the .307 to 7mm-07.  Here we go again.  I guess that would be a .243-07.

For others who may be considering reaming a Handi to .358, I would strongly recommend the .356 instead.  Mine handles both the .356 and .358 very smoothly, without any problems.  Evidently the 4D .356 reamer cuts a chamber to properly headspace the .358 Why settle for half when you can have the whole pie.

I am ordering the reamer because if this works it will be a simple conversion that can be done by hand with no lathe required, thereby making it feasable for any Handiholic to do at home with no expensive tools.
 By using the 307 cases and standard reloading dies for the 243, 7-08,308 and the proper shell holder cases can be formed and reloaded without expensive dies.
 Twoshooter your description of the reamer is exactly what I am building.To be honest if this works like I hope it will, the reamer will be donated to the reamer rental and passed around to friends here on GBO.
 The Head space is identical for all of the 308 based family so with careful chambering and ejector / extractor modifications the rimmed versions will interchange with the rimless versions of the same caliber.

If you decide to cut it on a lathe, make sure you have the chamber centered on your lathe and that your lathe does not have a lot of play. Quite often the chamber is not in the perfect center of the barrel blank and if you do not adjust for that the rim you cut will be off to one side of the chamber and the case rim will hang up . You should use the lathe chuck that each dog is self adjusting. 1/2 " end mill makes a perfect rim cut. Also check dia of end mill to be sure it is not over or under sized and  do a test cut in some steel if not sure.

The centering is not critical when cutting the rim in a lathe.  The rim diameter is cut quite a bit larger than the cartridge rim, so a few thousanths off does not make any difference.  If you make or buy a reamer, it will have to have a very close fit to pilot in the chamber or you will have big problems with chatter when you try to do the cut.  Larry

It may not be critical to you, but it is to me when I work on a barrel. I guess I just try to do the work so it works and also look good. (No rebuttal necessary just trying to offer some helpfull info if he was not going to use a reamer.)

Larry is one of the good guys and offering help, same as you. He also does fine work and has done so for many years.

(If i may) What he is saying is the rim cuts depth is critical but it's diameter ( as long as bigger then rim) is not as critical. Now not critical within the realm of thousandths of an inch, NOT inches...

Sorry, guess I should have said it is not critical to the function of the rim.  I've done a bunch on the lathe and have never had a problem with the chamber being centered or it looking right, it is simply a non issue.  Larry

I have liked the idea of a 7x30 Waters in a handi for some time. I still like and feel it would be a very well received caliber to add to the H&R lineup.

But looking at the caliber lineup with a sys toward the 307/356 case. A rimmed 7/08 might be even better. I gaurenty it will exceed the Waters ballistically and making brass will be simple Simon. Just run a rimmed case thru a 7/08 die and you have the case. Rechambering... Naw just make a rim cut....

After I get the 356 ironed out I will look back at this....

Another option would be to take a 7x57 barrel and cut it for the 7x57R which is a popular cartridge for single shots in Europe.
 
Ammo is available from Sellier and Bellot.
