Local Store has used Encore 22-250 have some questions?

Well I was out for my lunch walk today and stopped in at the local gun store.  Was looking around and saw that they had a TC encore (blued and used) with a SS barrel in 22-250  24" from EA Brown or EABRCO (I think the same place?) written on the side.  It has a grey laminated thumbhole stock long forearm ~15" and a trigger job ~ 4lbs (finger guess).  All for $700.00.  I really liked the way it handled (better than my m70 pre 64) but I have a few questions


My questions are


1. This price seems a little high for a used gun. Is it?


2. what are the chance the barrel is good and accurate?


3. with after market barrels do I do I have to worry if someone screwed it up putting it together? (I did notice that there is rubbing marks from the frame on the barrel from when it has been opened and closed but it seems smooth now)


4. How do I check for the aftermarket hanger bars to see if it's free floated?


5. Do these eject or extract the rounds?


6. How bad is my velocity going to tank if I cut it to 16-18"?

Seems pretty expensive to me.

1.  The price is very high.  For a used Encore, I would pay no more than $275 for a blue frame, $175 for the barrel and $125 for the thumb hole stock.


2.  I'm not sure what you mean by accurate as different people's criteria for accurate can differ quite a bit.  I also have no experience with EABCO barrels.


3.  Rub marks on the barrel are normal irrespective of what barrel you use.


4.  If it has a hanger bar, there will be a bar screwed on to the barrel and the forend will be screwed on to the bar.  If there is no hanger bar, the forend screws directly on to the barrel.


5.  Empty cases are extracted.


6.  Velocity will probably drop 15 to 30 fps per inch of barrel you remove.  Fear not, however, as Encore 22-250 handgun barrels are available and people seem happy with them.

The price is too high in my opinion. And while I have had a good, accurate Eabco barrel, I have seen some horror stories as of late. Unless you can check out the chamber before buying, I'd be hesitant. Caveat emptor.

The barrel definitely doesn't justify the extra cost.  You can get a trigger job for about $75; personally, I would pay no extra for a trigger job on a used frame.
