30 carbine handi

what would be a good twist to use for the 30 carbine,i gotta try stubbing one now ,got lots of brass and dies,pawn shop usually has lots of shotguns for about 60 bucks each

If I àm not mistaken, I do believe most Military Guns were a 1:20 twist rate.... That was for 110 gr bullets though. :)

i was just looking on green mountain barrel blank they got pretty good prices on 30 cal, blanks

I've done several of them, use a 300 win Mag take off barrel, they work perfect and are a dime a dozen, I have a reamer.  They are a lot of fun to shoot and if you use the fast twist win mag barrel you can shoot subsonic 180gr cast from them.  Larry

There are dozens of 300 Win Mag Remington barrels for sale, for some reason people take the off the rifles all the time.  Them or 300 WSSM barrels, do a search on ebay for take off barrel or rifle barrel and you will find a lot, mostly for about $45.00 delivered to you.  GM does have some good deals also, but a used Remington barrel will be your best deal.  Larry

If reloading, especially with cast, it would work just fine.

Think I'd stick to std. dia. but whatever the OP wants to do.  Nice to be able to buy off the shelf .308 bullets designed for the M1 Carbine like Hornady's Semi-jacketed bullet I use.  ;)  Course the Handi Platform would open up use of other pointier bullets that would not feed in a std. M1-Carbine too.  ;)

That is the good thing about reloading, you can experiment with all kinds of different loads.
If you are out just plinking, it doesn't hurt to use bullets that are .002 too small.

Larry, or anyone else out there with any expierence in this, what is your opinion of the twist rate of a .300 Win Mag barrel (? what is that twist rate anyway?) and shooting 110 grain standard mil surp .30 cal carbine ammo out of it? Would it stabilize the bullets?...Thanks....<><....:)

I think the 300 is 1/10, so it would be actually too fast, but I dont know if you can "overstabilize" a bullet, besides, the carbine is so much slower than a 300 it would offset it some. I think it would probably work just fine.

You won't be shooting it past about 100 yards anyway, and the 10 twist works just fine, you can even load 180gr cast and shoot it subsonic.  Larry

You should be just fine with the 1:10 .308.  I've used reduced loads with light bullets in .308 down to "around" 2200 fps, in 1:10, and they shoot well.  Seems like Remington 721's, 700's and the pre-64 70's used a 1-12 twist, if you think that the slower twist is an advantage. 
I'm pulling the barrel off a Vanguard chambered to .300 Weatherby to make a .300 H&H on the action.  (I have NO use for the Weatherby cartridges, and have more than a thousand new H&H cases)  I suspect that those various .300 whatever Mag barrels came off for projects, especially back when everyone HAD to have a 416 of some flavor.
Another excellent source of 30 caliber barrels are take-off 1903 and A3 barrels, and generally, can be had for a song if they've been cut back.  New-old-stock, in the wrap GI barrels are pushing $250 these days, but sportered barrels go for dirt.
Nice to see someone else considering the "pre-AAC Blackout" .30 caliber round!
