A Hoke County preschooler was fed chicken nuggets for lunch because a state worker felt that her homemade lunch did not have enough nutritional value, according to a report by the Carolina Journal.
The West Hoke Elementary School student was in her More at Four classroom when a state agent who was inspecting lunch boxes decided that her packed lunch — which consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips — “did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines,” the Journal reports.
The decision was made under consideration of a regulation put in place by the the Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services, which requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs to meet USDA guidelines.
“When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones,” the Journal reports.
The student’s mother told the Journal she received a note from the school about the incident and was charged $1.25 for the cafeteria tray, from which her daughter only ate three chicken nuggets.
The note explained how students who did not bring “healthy lunches” would be offered the missing portions and that parents could be charged for the cost of the cafeteria food, the Journal reports.
The mother, who was not identified in the report, expressed concern about school officials telling her daughter that she wasn’t “packing her lunch box properly.”

I would hate to be the principal of that school. I thought the kid's lunch sounded pretty good. Whatever happened to common sense? The up side to this story is that now it is known to the public, and maybe things will change. Would you like to talk to the student's mother? Better get out your fireproof ear muffs!

The lunch is not the problem. The real problem here is the people that are hired to do these jobs. You can bet this social worker was a single mother with three kids and no husband and no education. Her idea of a Health Food Store is Mickey Ds.

I saw this last night and almost couldn't sleep it upset me so. In my opinion the home made lunch is probably more healthy than those chicken nuggets - usually the health foodies really attack stuff like that - they are pretty low on my list. I also wonder what would have happened if that kid had an allergic reaction to the school lunch. I know some things for sure: I would NOT pay, and I'd be in the administration's face over this.

It does make me wonder how widespread this stuff is. I hope the reporter follows up and gets more info.

It really alarms me that more and more teachers and school administrators seem to think they know better than parents and take things into their own hands without parental consultation. Where are they learning this? Where do they get this attitude?

We have had some instances in our town here in Alaska where teachers should have called the parents but didn't.

That attitude alarms me most of all. I think the public needs to talk to the colleges and professors and get things cleared up at that level.

Shoot, I'd almost calmed down today and now I'm getting fired up again before bed.......

I might just vote for Ron Paul anyway.

The description of the contraband makes it seem like a good, normal, well balanced lunch for a kid. Meat, starch, fruit, and fruit juice. What's wrong with that? I've seen school lunches recently and they are garbage. And I don't mean that figuratively. I mean that literally. The quality of the ingredients is extremely poor, and it's all prepared factory food. They don't actually cook stuff. High school lunches typically are pizza and a coke, or something similar. Even the people who work in the school cafeterias will tell you it's a disgrace.

Sound kinda nutty, but I can easily see this kind of confiscation extending to all these things kids are allergic to these days, like peanuts for example. They may start confiscating peanut butter sandwiches. Then the NAACP will fight it because it disparages the life and accomplishments of George Washington Carver. And the ACLU will support it on first amendment grounds.

It doesn't seem farfetched that candy or soda brought from home would be confiscated as part of a zero tolerance policy of some kind.

There have been things in the news about kids being expelled for having a butter knife in their lunchbox. Zero tolerance no knives policies in those cases.

Fron 2000-2002 at taught at a HS that didn't serve any food that required cutting due to not being able to even use plastic knives.

Just better be glad this did not happen to me when I was going to school and my mother had made my lunch! First someone would have left with a nubbs in place of their fingers! and then the " She Bear" would have tracked down that same someone and extracted several pounds of flesh !!

my wife was watching a TV program called airline, I think, but there was a mother with a kid that was allergic to peanuts. she wanted all snacks removed from the plane because they might have been in contact with peanuts. I symphathize with the kid, but momma should not expect everyone to knuckle under to her.
it was southwest airlines, momma and kid did not get to fly.

State board of health officials inspect food serving lines, food quanity and nutritional value, and sanitary packaging and transport all of the time in schools, resturants and even prisons. Trust me- you want these people visiting some of the public schools. I am betting this was a scheduled visit for a basic inspection by one of those officials, he was touring the lunch room, saw the childs meal, offered an opprotunity for the little girl to receive more food and she ended up in the food line for whatever reason- more thna likely because she got confused. Health inspectors have been around for decades- not since the obama administration. IMO, the inspector should have stayed mission oriented and not gotten side tracked causing the likely confusion in the first place.
