Why on earth would the Gov. Of N.J. order flags flown at half staff for Whitney Houston?
Does he order it for Soldiers and Police killed in the line of duty? Why for a drug addict?
This cannot be justified!

Im thinking the same way. Flying the flag at half mast for a civilian of no political affiliations is absurb.

I have to say that here in Alaska we seem to fly at half staff pretty often - WAY more so than I recall as a younger person.  And I'm beginning to feel that the increased frequency diminishes the symbolism for the most worthy individuals.  I can't recall who all were so honored here in our state but a couple were very marginally worthy at best.


Its probably good to bring up the subject.  A public discussion of just what it takes to be so honored might be a good thing.

The flags in minnesota were half staff almost the entire bush presidency as a political signal from the state, and about one third of the time now. But some got tired of doing that and just ignore the half staff request. I find most half staffs to be offensive. It is not supposed to be for every death or misfortune.

Yep.  It has about as much significance any more as giving a "participation" trophy to every kid on a last place baseball team.

Why for Whitney Houston? I don't know... not my decision. But listen up: nobody is just one thing. What is the worst someone could say about you? Is that you?

That was so wrong it almost leaves me speechless!

To make the symbol of the half staff flag a political statement is to spit on the grave of all of those people who have been honored by the use of the symbol!  Their sacrifice is brought down to the level of self indulgent politicians who have no love for country, history and honorable tradition.
